Please help! I've searched for information on how to germinate crape myrtle and have never had success. Does it need cold treatment? light or no light? All tips appreciated.
crape myrtle germination
I can't help you on how to germinate them--but if you collected it from a hybrid plant (which most of them are) the seeds may not come true from the parent. It could be a different color, different size, or lose some of the resistance to powdery mildew that many hybrids have been bred for. So if you're looking for something that looks like the original plant your best bet would be to start it from cuttings instead.
I tried some last year and gave them no special treatment. I just sowed them in a pot maybe a quarter of an inch deep, set them in the sun and kept it moist. Don't remember exactly how long it took to germinate, it think it was about 2 to 3 weeks. I even had one of the seedling ( about 6" ) bloom in the fall.
