I think I am ready to join the strep killers club now I just need some to kill. All of the incredible pictures have finally done me in and I must try to grow at least one though I am sure I'll be part of the killer club in no time at all.
Which are the smaller ones? I think I asked this before but I've forgotten the answer. When it gets warm I will trade some of my round robin babies for a strep baby and maybe a leaf too to see if I can kill both.
I had company tonight and am so tired and must go to bed. I can't believe I came here instead of going to bed. Enablers for the addicted.
Strep Killers Unite!
I am sorry I asked questions in two places and I read this and have my answers. They like it between 55 and 80 so my apartment is fine there and they don't like alkaline soil or overwatering and I have bark to help there. So maybe I won't kill all of them.
I'm sure you will do great Anna!!
Oh shoot if you kill them all we will just have to send you more to make you learn to keep them alive... Pssst I can't keep and AV alive if you paid me a million dollars... Now a leaf I can grow but once it gets past that forget it...LOL
Hugs,
Susan
It just struck me as funny that Lynn grows streps from a leaf and Susan grows AVs from a leaf but neither of them do well after that point. I am looking forward to seeing if I can manage the growing part of the streps. I've managed the starting and the growing of the AVs so far and even have a couple with blooms starting so I guess I'm getting the knack of them. It seems perfect timing to try something new.
When I grow an AV leaf all I do is stick it in a shot glass or small pot then leave it alone.. I don't dome them or anything...LOL Just pure luck for me... Like I said let it start to grow and I am guaranteed to kill it...LOL They tend to get suckers on them and then I tend to pick them to death...LOL
Hugs,
Susan
Anna,
We might be accidentally misleading you a bit.I know both Susan and I ran into a time crunch this year and our plants paid the price!!
Sometimes when you have a lot of plants that can happen.Susan can grow anything most of the time and I can grow many things at least some of the time LOL.
I just don't want you to feel intimidated about growing anything!! ^_^.Each Gessie is just a little bit different, care wise, and if you take time to really pay attention to them you will have no problems......or at least nothing major!!
Lynn
You always say what I mean so nice Lynn... :-) BUT I really can't keep alive an AV... As much as I love all the different colors at times trying to keep them all alive is allot... I want to now keep the ones I have alive and worry about the others down the road...LOL
Hugs,
Susan

Here's the latest--looking a little better...
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1070930/
Hubby had to leave work early today darn it. But at least if the box is there I know it's in a warm mailroom and not in a cold post office facility someplace.
That was scary about the sale of DG. I hope it works out.
He sold it already..They let him still remain as "leader" or what ever you want to call it... Now the new owner sold it... Time will tell...
Anna, so far two boxes came and plants were ok, so I am hoping the other three boxes will be ok.... Let me know when you get the box.. please
Hugs,
Susan
It's here! I don't have it yet, but hubby called me to say he has it. he didn't open it but when he comes home I will open it and plant them in a fast mix.
Oh my goodness Susan. I was expected 3 or 4 small plants not a box full of them! It looks like some of these were babies all growing together right and they need to be separated. I made up some mix for them and have potted most of them but am taking a short break to say thank you.
Thank you very much - this was generous beyond any expectation. I am so excited to see if I can keep them alive but more importantly to get some of these gorgeous blossoms that ya'll keep posting.
Susan,
Just got my box.A few leaves got nipped, but I'm sure they will make it.Thanks again,Sweetie!!
Lynn
I have a question about the leaves on these new plants. I few of the ends of them are soft/mushy, maybe they got too cold? Do I just cut off the end of the leaf? Or do I remove the entire leaf? Most of them look just fine it's just a couple here and there.
Just cut off the damaged part and they should be fine.
Yeahhhhh!!! We all got some new streps!!! Whoo hoo!!!!
Happy growing ladies,
Shanika
Please share pics when they start blooming, Ladies.
I am so glad they all made it to there new homes.... Now remember some of these were grouped together and yes some are tiny or bigger.... If you pot them all together remember they may bloom two diffrent blooms as they may be two diffrent plants...LOLOLOL I am all glad you were surprised by them ...LOL I told you I would share..LOLOL
Hugs to all,
Susan
Nice reading over a cup of coffee in the morning:)

Interesting article. I'm especially intrigued by the section that talks about keeping the roots of streptocarpus cool. Read on!:)

mrsbonnie
Very nice reading. It must have been pretty amazing seeing the streps growing in the wild.
well good morning Bonnie! LOL
hey, good day to you also. lol
mrsbonnie
Well it's a whole 3 days and they are still alive so let's see if I can double that and make it 6! They got a bit droopy and unhappy on Saturday evening so I did cover them and they look better today but it's as dry as a bone in my apartment. I wish I lived in one of the older apartments with radiant heat as I bet that is much happier environment for plants and people too.
I'm keeping them just barely damp and now with the cover I imagine I'll not need to water very often I just hope I keep them alive.
I have confidence in you Anna ^_^ !!
So do I Anna.... you can do it... If not this time we will keep them coming until you get it right...LOLOL That is how I learned... You ask Lynn as to how many I killed when I first started and at times still do..... :-)
Don't know when but I am going to do a cutting again of my leaves and put them down again so this way I will have more to send to those who want them because they killed there others or just plan want more... ;-)
Hugs and Love,
Susan
I think I separated mine into at least 15 pots and when I looked today most of them actually look like they are perking up and aren't so unhappy. A couple are goners I think but I'll wait them out and keep them domed until they perk up or I lose them. But I am very happy that 3 or 4 actually look like they are happy and will grow. I feel like a horrible person when I kill plants and though I know you'll all help me if I do I just don't want to be a plant killer! I hope I am not jinxing myself by talking about them doing well. Shoot I better stop it and go knock wood.
