She has the place for sale. She claims she's going to be 70, but I wouldn't put her a day older than 56 or 57. If she goes out of business I am going to be at her door bright and early for a chance at her stock plants. The Paulensis was incredible. I've got to try to get down for the open house in November this year. And I scored an Aglaomorpha Coronans. I've waited 3 years for her to have one of those available.
To Get More Begonias - Stay Put? Which one are you hunting?
Then after you picked up all her plants, I can come visit you in May to get some cuttings? LOL. I hope the place doesn't sell before my planned visit in May...
I love Morocco. It's vigorous indoors and out!
Are you really coming to the New England/New York area in May? I'll have to start more cuttings! I doubt she'll sell before May - and she said she'd need 3 months lead time from the purchaser to close up shop. She did get a call while I was there.... She's doing a show at the Tower Hill Botanical Garden in April that sounds nice, but the one in September is supposed to be better.
Yes I am going to a conference with my husband in DC but I will take an overnight trip to explore all the nurseries I order from.
Tentatively planned for 5/20-5/22. I may not be able to get to Rob's Violet barn though. If I can at least see Lauray's and Lyndon Lyon's I'll be happy.
If you are going to have room in your car, it is worth calling Lyndon Lyons and ordering rex baskets. I ordered last year, and it was $25 for an 8" basket - and they were big. It's around 5 plants in every basket. I'll be picking mine up in May. I also have some other baskets ordered - columnea I think. The baskets are usually special order, and they start them now for a May delivery.
I'm about 45 - 55 minutes from Lyndon's, so I expect a visit. I can have some begonias ready for you. The plants may still be in the greenhouse, depending on temps, but some of the outside plants should be in bloom.
Thanks. I wish I would get basket but I am flying back from dc so I'll have to restrain myself. Of course I want to come see you. Don't feel obligated to do any special rootings for me. I can't wait to see your ginormous greenhouse. :)
Well, you can take your pick of anything I have rooted (or cuttings you would like). You're in my calendar. Just let me know the details.
I'm fortunate that I live close to Baker's Acres and Glasshouse Works, so I can look at the plants and see what I'd like for new ones this year. Trading is almost always more economical, though :)
Celene,
I am so envious of your ohio location. It's an 8 hr drive for me but often worthwhile. Baker's acres is definitely on my calendar for June. Would you say that would be the best time to go? I want to catch them when they have the most choices of begonias.
If I go there, we can meet and trade cuttings too. :)
Happy to meet up! I think any time after mid-May should be fine. They open mid-April, but it's often too cold for the begonias and tender tropicals then.
