Claire just got attacked by my dog

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I have bathed muddy, wet and freezing cold silkies to warm them up. I thought they might die otherwise. I just filled the sink with warm-ish water (not hot, perfectly comfortable to stick your hand in and leave it there). I used Dawn detergent because that is what they use for seabirds that have had unfortunate interactions with crude oil spills. I used one hand to secure the bird from its top, trying to keep a hold on the wings. The other hand was used for gentle scrubbing and lathering. They did not mind it at all. I'm not sure if that's because it felt good or because they didn't have the energy to complain. This was after heavy rains turned the barnyard to muck, and then we had freezing rain on top of it. Silly birds wouldn't go inside.

Anyway, immediately after removing them from their "bathtub" I wrapped them in towels that I had pre-warmed in the dryer. Gave them a good fluff-down and then used the hair dryer, always keeping my hand somewhere in the path of the hot air so that if it started to be uncomfortable on my hand, it was time to move the hair dryer away.

Yup, I thought I did a thread on it...

Thanks CMoxon
I'll try that tomorrow. She has been so sweet and gentle while we treat her, hopefully she won't mind so much getting a bath. She doesn't have as much spunk as her sister, but she is walking around and eating and talking. They are so connected, I can't believe losing one of them.

Claire is doing so much better now. She's getting spunky again. She eats, talks, walks around, lays eggs, and flys. . She's even contending with Alice again for their favorite food. I think she's going to make it. Thank you all again so much for your support and good advice.

Happy to hear that! Glad you're feeling better Claire!

Yay! It's so hard when one "child" hurts annother. You can never really get mad at it when you love them both.

So pleased to hear that your perfectly named chicken is doing better! I was a bit worried about her but she seems to be bouncing right back. Hooray!

Glad she is doing well. I have a big roo that tangled with a dog. I sprayed him with purple gentian (sp?). He healed up quick and has done very well. Chickens are tough. Good thing cause too many times they are not real bright.

Boy, that's the understatement of the year...
(all 9 days of it)

My roo that got attacked finally learned his lesson after getting it twice. Thing is, it was my dog who stays tied up. The dog only has 15ft of chain. The rooster free ranges. looks like he could avoid 15 feet out of several acres. LOL

I had a leghorn hen that jumped in the dogs yard 3 times... the third time I wasn't around to rescue her. You'd think...

My Grandmother had Leghorns; I think they're sort of "special".

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Yeah, in a dingbat sorta way. Once was enough for me. Even for a chicken they were stupid champions.

Clarkson, KY

Ugh...broilers are the stupid champions. they eat themselves to death or smother each other to death. Economical? Yes! Nasty? Yes!

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Ah, but their bulk limits their ability to jump into a dogs mouth repeatedly, a very special quality you must admit.

At last!! A positive!! lolol...gah -seeing those obese things come running for food! amazing and icky

Maybe we should sign one up for "The Biggest Loser"?

Not that I've ever seen it...but wouldn't they whip the little tub of schmaltz into shape?

Clarkson, KY

Ugh. lol. Not sure they're that long lived...it's awful!

Kinda like lunch time at Pizza Hut in town... not that I eat there, you understand... just driving by is enough to see and put me off my feed. {{erp}}

Never saw them run....;p

LMAO... true, so true.
