You and your students have to grow sunflowers. You can even have a race/contest who's is biggest, smallest, etc.
LeBug, you have to naturalize a bunch of poppies to entertain the law enforcement! Hope the are familiar with tomatoes and don't have to pull any out for lab tests.
Seed Swap and Chat #47 Waiting for seeds
I keep jugs of water sitting around with lids on for Just THAT purpose. Never know when you are going to have waterproblems.
I used soda bottles, 2 litr. Tuck them in a corner out of the way til you need them.
Maillady must have came way late yesterday, but happened to check mailbox comign in from church.
IloveJesus99 got yoru seeds. : ) Piggy stickers all over the outsid e of package LOL
It's very windy and cold here in South Jersey! Thanks for being so understanding too. Would you believe another family cat of ours, Ruby*, died this morning...we are all wiped out and exhausted at this point.
....but the good news is that we've been receiving a lot of seed catalogs. Can you guess what I'll be doing? Yup, sitting here with a nice cup of hot herbal tea and browsing away :) Thank goodness for gardening. I really find so much comfort in all phases of it. And I'm looking forward to our swap seeds. Thanks again
*Ruby was my "model" for the DG mini-series "Tango, the Garden Cat" since she was a small, black cat, just like the real Tango, who at the time of the articles had not been rescued yet.
Wind...so sorry for the loss of your sweet furry friends.Below is a memorial link.
http://cats.about.com/library/weekly/blmemorials.htm
OH Diana... I could not imagine the loss of one fur kids, but two.
You and your family have my heart felt sympathies.
Awwwwwwwwwwww Wind.. Sorry to hear that. I knwo when I lost my companion of 18 years then it seeme d just like not to long after lost the other one of 15 years. As much as we hate to loos e them knwo at least they out of pain and suffering and you gave them a good life they mayeb wouldnt of had. : )

Thanks :)))
I'm going to make a few garden memorial, mosaic, stepping stones for each of them too I think. I did that for our dog back in '05. I've been wanting to make a mosaic brick border for our butterfly garden too. I can feel a few garden craft projects coming soon. I'll post pictures if and when I do it.
So... I'd imagine you all saw it, but just in case... There's a mum coop that just started today :) Lots of good choices, two ship dates, but limited number of participants so if you're interested get on over there soon...
I wrote this a while ago :) Got stuck working on a virus :) Everything is alright now thank goodness Ha!
Oh Wind I'm so sorry it's bad enough to lose one then to lose another it's awful so sorry for your loss. I've only had mine a short time and hate to think how I would feel to lose one of them little lone two.
Yes gardening is a miracle worker hope you have lots of little seedlings coming up this year just bury yourself in those and maybe it will make the days a little easier :) How many cats do you have?
Ella, hope your pipes don't freeze on you this is an unusual winter for us it seems I can't remember it being so cold this early in the year I might be wrong each winter seems worse for me here as much as I hate them lol But then where would we be if we couldn't WS lol I'm not sure if you should even be on the thread if you couldn't have your coffee Ha! I get a little testy if I can't have mine ;^P
Wind, a few garden memorial, mosaic, stepping stones sounds nice wish I had thought of that when I had my last dog passed :) Still may do it later.
Cats live for 18 years Ella? OMG I'm glad but they will out live me!
>>Cats live for 18 years Ella?
Yes... they can live very long lives.... one of my sisters just passed. Her "x" took two of them, and the oldest was 22 she thinks. I never cared for cats until i met Aja. He was a great cat.
18 is pretty common for a cat.
Sure didn't know that about cats...We used to have lots of barn cats..They were so wild and that was just the way we liked them. They killed a lot of mice and lived in the barn and patroled the property. I would feed them at the barn and even put their food up high to get away from dogs that would roam through the neighborhood. Then 4 years ago we got our beagle pup Buddy and he ran all the cats off. He just aggravated the livin' daylights out of them. Now we just have MICE
Not so funny either.....I wonder if I got a cat and explained to Buddy that he could be its friend if he would pay any attention.lol
Veronica
Took my dog a year to get used to the kittens in the house lol I have heard that cats that run outside don't live as long, oh the vet told me that.
I've still been battleing a virus I may not be back for a while I was checking to see if I went thru above this is so agravating!
hope you feel better soon, Lea.
We've had Charlie over a year now, took Buddy [king of the house] a little while to get used to having a cat ... and while they are not "buddies" they co-exsist .... I"m hoping they will be friends one day. But neither has been "mean" to the other. Whether they are still feeling each other out or not, i have no idea.
Uggg.... i've been up since 4am.. cant sleep. Who knows, maybe i'll get started on Ws'ing soon.
Tcs. Could be wrogn btu think Le a has puter virus nto human one. But both are nasty!!!!!!! Tcs... How do ya winter sow when things so frozen solid with this cold?
Was your cat the oen that was on tv the other day as they think the oldest livign cat so far at 22.
Yuck Lea... Hope ya get that virus fixed. Know it frustrating as all get out.
My companions was dogs. I allergic to cats. They lov e me , but trigger asthma attacks. Sorry shoudl have made that mroe clearer but yep soem cats can liv e logn time.
I been up for horus too. Makign sure pipe s stil drip freely. I knwo I freezing here. Dang is 18 and with the wind is a whopping 9 degrees and the worst temps are yet to come.
All I got to say is al this cold betetr kill all the sketter s and ther e larvae and dang hoppers too. Hope my benificials and friendlie s all stay warm.
The absoute worst I onyl got enough sugar for 5 mroe cups of coffee. Agggggggggggggggg! It betetr get warm enough to warm up some and car to start so I cna get to corner store and back.
I think you are right, about Lea's virus... well, i hope the :PC gets better soon.
Ws'ing up here is a snap. ya figure, when seeds fall in the Fall... they are in and on the frozen ground too. and with Ws - you dont have to stratify?? [freeze] the seeds as they are frozen outside. then the seeds germinate when they are ready.
and regarding the cat... nope, mine is only 1. I got him from sjweld who found him in her garage last year. there was a huge thread on him "Anyone want a kitty" ... and Critter was the "if all else fails" home. but we ended up with him... and funny thing.. i have been allergic to cats my whole life.. well since about 8 yrs of age. but for some reason, not him. whether i grew out of it or not, i dont know. My sis always had cats, and i was OK as long as i washed my hands after petting them... but if i didnt... Bam, hit hard with itchy watery eyes and scratchy throat. never any asthma though.
as for temps... we are still very cold, but with a bit of cloud cover it's a balmy 7. I do have to go out to the PO today, as I'm sending someone some of my Altas gloves from the Co-Op she missed out on. It would be nice if i could just tape $2 to the enive and have the mail man pick it up for me. LOL.
so as long as i'm out, I'll run to the store to pick up a few things.
As for my next project, the window cornice boxes... i spent some time on line last night on JoannFabrics, as it was the last day of their sale... got me some batting, thumb tacks and some wide bias tape [i hope that works out for the accent stripe thing...] so maybe i'll run to Home Depot and look for some foam board.
Or, maybe i'll jsut take a nap....
So, are you thinking you will get the seeds out by weeks end?
Wind, I'm so sorry to hear of your 2 cats. Yes, it is so hard to lose them. I like the idea of memorial stepping stones for your pets.
Veronica, love the tree decorated with flowers.
Star, I can't believe it is so cold there ... your just as cold as we are, even colder, we are at 21 degrees. Burrrrrrr!
I'm late in saying Happy New Year to everyone. Had to work the holiday and the weekend, it was so light at the Hospital, turned out to be a good weekend to work. smile
When I was young we had outdoor cat/cats, Mom said the oldest one she knew of was 5 years old when it died. No visits to the Vets at the that time, they were just to kill the mice. Our cats lived under the house, thats where we fed them also. They kept warm by sleeping next to the furnace under there. We lived by a busy road, that was the end of a lot of them. Dogs lived outside also, all except one. They didn't go to the vets either till we lost a lot due to parvo and heartworm. I guess that was in the late 60's/early 70's. We always had about 3 dogs, most were hunting dogs.
Ahhhh, the seed catalogues have been a blessing, but I've been good and not ordered any. One of the things I really want is a Gooseberry and I keep seeing them in the cataloges .......
Anyone grow these?
Tcs.... I sendign out boxe s on Monday. Will have camera and e xtra batterie s loaded for journey. Just hope windshield not all frosted over so cna take pics. LOL No heate r or defrost in car.
Ya might just ask your postmistrees is really great if I need to I cna just do that tapemoney and put in mailbox and she wil do for me and brign back change. I don't abus e it but she a great person for our area.
Who has grown the Abilution bella serie s before? I got soem seed s last year from coop to giv e a try cuz pic looke d so pretty.
http://summerhillseeds.com/abutilon-bella-red-p-259.html
well mien sure didn't look liek pic. I had stem that came up that really crocked and had elave s on top and had blooms, bt didn't have any branchign liek description says . Poor things looke d so pathetic. They was stil tryign to put out a coupel of blooms last week. Gonan see fi they winter hardy here or not.
But wodnere d doe s anybody happen to knwo do they need pinche d to do the branching or did my plants just not like me. : )
I never pinched mine, but a branch broke off and it did become fuller, so I think I might give it a try this year and see what happens. Mine are 2 years old now, I store them in the garage during the winter. They are sort of like a Maple tree.
A friend of mine had a Yellow one. It was so cute. I'm not sure what she did with it though. After I read up in them, i told her she could keep it as a house plant. She's in Milwaukee ... so it'd be dead if it were outside. I wanted to get some seeds from her, but forgot.
We both got some great plants form a flea market up in Adams, WI last year... we will have to do that again this year.
I grew some this summer. They didn't do much, but they were cute. I just didn't ever pot them into bigger pots, should have pampered them more. I think pinching would be a good idea. Will definitely try them again this year, and treat them better. The flowers were sweet!
As you all know by now I am a computer dummie. I have been having trouble with my puter. Reading about Lea's virus makes me ask the question. Do they sometimes get better on their own. A couple of days ago mine was driving me crazy when I was trying to send some pictures ( the tree and some of my family on the ORVG chat thread) Called tech and he very grouchily, I thought, finally told me if I could access the internet the problem was probably a virus. I told him once I was afraid to unplug something that he would yell at me. He didn't respond to that. Finally we got off the phone I wa polite and thanked him but he obviously doesn't have any people skills. I said I was polite but I did not use my normally cheerful friendly voice. LOL Thinking of taking it to a repair shop in Seymour that a friend used. she said they were very good and very friendly.
Sorry for intruding on the seed swap thread but I consider you all my friends even though I didn't participate in the swap.
Veronica
Veroinca... No, virus' do not get better on their own.
have you discovered the Computer Forum here yet?
If you could describe your "troubles" i'm sure we all could help.

I've been on hold for two hours trying to talk to Norton's!!!
This is the first time I've even been able to get in here all day it keeps prompting me to add another spyware program for Norton's for so much money again and that is the problem they are saying I have a trojen virus and a few others aren't they suppose to take cate of that???? I just paid for two years of Norton's in Feb. I am so mad every time I try and get on here that prompt comes up and I refuse and it just stays there now I'm on hold for two hours trying to get something done about it geeeezeeee!!!
Tony is on there now lol I have gotten the back room picked up while waiting on the phone lol
Microsoft does not like Dave's. I have Problems with it too. I went to a security called AVAST! You may want to check it out. It has a Free edition too.
Lea... I was a Norton's user for 11 yrs!! had the two yr subscription... when i ran out, i dumped it for freebies. Been happy for over a year now [Oct of 08 I switched]
At least you have Tony to help you.... but are you getting errors? what sort of issues are you having? Normally what ever pops up on my screen... i google it to see what it is, then find a [free] way to eradicate it.
you can always shoot me a Dmail.
Star, I know Mechelle T had severe health issues with her son just before christmas and again after. He was having seizers(didn't spell that right) and couldn't walk or talk and went from hospital to hospital and came home for Christmas and I believe had to go back right after. I haven't even heard from her in a while and she always stayed in touch with me. Not sure what is going on but will try to get in touch with her today if possible. I didn't know hers wasn't in yet.
Mekos... Ya I knew the little tyke was sick and figrue she may have had to take him back to hospital. Haven't heard anymore sicne before Christmas, so if ya happen to hear somethign shoot me a dmail, please. Hope he ok cuz so many folsk have lost children this year with flus and such. My crie s for thos e parents.
LeBug.. I not the one ask for any ptuer info, but I us e Norton, I just pay year by year. Hve ya tired unloadign it and then loadign it again. Usually when ya do that it finds and corrects and bugs, but onyl certain additions of Nortons take care of trojans.
Shoot that remind s me my Norton gona be comign due here soon again. Shoot. Why should life and computer s have to be so difficut. It a shme folsk have to be ugly and cause little folks head, heart and pocketbook aches.
I just got an e-mail from Mechelle and she said he was still in the hospital and not responding good at all and they have to go Wednesday for a big meeting at the hospital about his condition. I told her to contact you if she could and let you know about her seed package and if she wanted to send or drop out this year. Hopefully you will hear soon. Her son is a young teenager and she is very worried and spends most of her time there. She is not on the computer much at all. Please keep them ALL in your prayers. They think a weak heart was causing the seizures at one time but I don't know if they have decided for sure or not.
Lea,
Don't add that spyware and if i the one I thinking of only one thing take off . It about messed mine up big time thank goodness for my daughter she looked up and talked to her grandfather-in-law and he told her what to do . I will look on here and see what she did if you want and can send you a d-mail dang thought that one been gone
Lea
If it is same one that tried to get on mine the only thing that got it off was Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and it a free thing like tcs all I have is free programs and they work AVG is my virus thingie and it free.
Hope this helps and it will fight you if the same but it a hacker trying to mess you up and get your money and throw all kinds of mess at you.
Carolyn

The hospital trips, the wire s all plugge d into hsi head for days on end. Was a nightmare and a half. They wa s so ba d they ha d calle din a top brain specialist. it was a nightmare of a time for sure.

Was waiting on you to do this for mechelleT we all know tht recieving a box of seeds from her friend will help her thru .She certainly needs a gift and hopefully there enough in extra seeds to cover the ones oinked from her. Great bunch of people here!!!!!
Carolyn
Regarding virus and spyware, I gave up on software to fix it. My kids really messed up the office desktop PC (thank the gods I use my own private laptop!)
So I bought and external USB hard drive, moved the files (musici, photos, docs, etc) that I wanted to keep to the external drive and got out the original "restore" CD that came with the machine and started fresh. Re-formatted the HD.
When that was done, I setup the kids accounts a limited usage- meaning they can't download anything, gave me and DH admin access with passwords, and setup virus and spyware controls, printer drivers, etc. and now it's working great.
Took me about 3 hours in total to do everything (keep in mind I'm a computer geek).
But it was the only way I could be sure everything was gone.
