Looking at the pictures, I suddenly got a message of 'stack overflow'. Can anyone tell me what that means. I am astounded at everyone's albums. I can't do anything like that, have to still figure out how to get pictures onto the computer. Not too worried as I mainly want to have iris seedling pics for study. I am enjoyinging everyone elses gardens, as we just got several more inches of snow.
Looking Back on 2009
Snowed here too.Windy now.Doubt I'll leave the computer.
I was peeking at your coleus photos you updated on picasa JoAnn... such a nice variety you had
Thanks I wish I could have been successful with all the samples I took but some varieties just didnt like to be taken inside and temps generaly cooled down so there are some that didnt make it past a month.
I lost a bunch this year too... only because the flu got me and I didn't get a chance to get everything in.. oh well.. the coleus from Dale & Jada will make up for those.. bad news is I lost all my trailers
:(
The only trailers that survived and are still going strong are
Psycoleus
Trailing Queen
Trailing Red which sported with the first cuttings.
I'll plant them because the red is so good.
Trailing salamander, trailing Burgundy, trailing Chocolate were all gonners after a month.
bummer.. I love the burgundy
Some one told me trailers are hard to propegate. At least I dont think it was my fault they didnt make it.
it's never OUR fault is it????
;)
never, ever, ever, ever. All entrys in the 'Plants I Have Luved and Killed' chapter in The Great Book of Lists have blames. 'smote by a hail stone' is my best methinks.
Lucy, no idea what stack overflow is, I've never seen that.
I'm going to get more pictures this year, too Jo Ann, and Patti is definitely my inspiration.
Patti, can you give your sources for the daffs? Brent and Becky I'm sure.
Irisma that stackoverflow thing happened to me when I was looking at Patti's pictures. I'm not sure why it's doing that, I've never had it happen before.
Sackoverflow sounds bad, hope I didn't cause it. I have never had that message.
PollyK Here are my sources. Some of these are repeat orders of ones already in the garden. Patti

Thank you so much, Patti, I will save that on a file. I've never heard of many of those places.
Planting bulbs here is a piece of cake, since we are on sand, so I don't know why I don't have more daffs.
patti when you plant more bulbs how often do you end up digging into bulbs already in the ground? i am amazed you are able to find new spots for them.
I'd like to see the answer to that one too.
We dug up a few when we planted the Sireuse JM. I just tossed them into the hole as it filled up.
Wha, rarely, we plant deep and with the drill we only seem to hit a handful of previously planted ones each fall. I then over plant with perennials, so those spots are safe from being disturbed. But DH is convinced that their is no place left, I disagree. I seem to always expand a few old beds each year, so that there is still virgin dirt. Some tulips don't come back and I just replant those spots with more of the same, if I can't live without those particular cultivars. Patti
I make sure tulips are planted with DL's
I over plant tulips with asiatic lilys and glads. I planted tulips under a new peony and a new salix this year. I'm hoping that works out. Daffs with DLs really works as the long lasting daff foliage blends really well with the DL foliage. Tarda tulips in the lettuce patch doesn't work for me as the lettuce doesn't come up quick enough and gets shaded by the tulips. I mostly accidently dig up anemone blandas oops.
The squirrls relocate anemone blandas. Its ok they aren't obtrusive.
Do you have tulips that come back each year, Jo Ann? Mine are nice one year, and then gone. Kinda expensive for just one year.
I had the same luck at my old house.
I guess the Darwins are faithful .Its just another expense for enjoyment like caladiums and other annuals.
I just planted more tulips than ever ere this fall we'll see if they come back spring 2011.
We are quite careful about planting tulips because of the deer. More daffs. Most successful of those are the 'Jack Snipe' & the mix in front of our stone wall. First time last yr was 'Decoy" with a small orange cup & happily the start of a few hybridized by a friend in MO. As he says American cultivars are more expensive but I am glad to have them.
Polly species tulips are no-fail returners for me. I don't bother with doubles anymore as they poop out in my garden.
i may drift toward daffs. I think they live longer.I have so many deer loving plants it will take a week to get everything sprayed.
I find that the emperor tulips stay around the best, except for 'pink emperor' my favorite which is perhaps why they are hard to find. Tried a tulip named 'Gander's Fantasy' very pretty, but didn't come up the 2nd yr.
I have a list of returners at home which I will post when I get back. If they return for me, they'll return for y'all for sure! (Note how I am practising my southern ^_^)
Have to practice SW.
I had peony flowered tulips in the old house. They were all the rage one year. They played out in 2 years. There is 1 here in the front garden.Maybe last year was its last.
Parrot and fringed tulips are hot too ge. They are a one season only in my zone although I am going to try some in my SW garden if I can find some that don't need prechilling. I have SO much to learn about desert gardening.
THATS what happened to mine.!!!
I was so dissapointed. I definatly will avoide them unless there is a co-op and I can buy them for$.50 each.
Definitely worth it if you can get them cheap as they do give a wonderous show.
I lose a percentage of tulip flowers to the deer every year. I have noticed though that if I get the later flowering ones they have a better chance to set a bud without it being decapitated. Planted some lily shaped ones last fall, don't know if they will return for a second year.
D-nut that is a pretty tulip. The longest a tulip has lasted around here is the darwin, about 6 years or so.
WOW what a difference! Looks great!
I am really pleased.
You should be pleased, Jo. A lot of hard work went into those beds.
D'nut is getting a southern accent already, too funny.
I need to plant some tulips this year, just to have for cutting for the house. I did some hyacinths for that purpose. But after seeing Pattis daffs I really will do daffs this year.
Thanks Polly
Your right.
I didnt think I had it in me.
