Think Spring! Seed Swapping thread

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL That would be me.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Hey Buttonner, I really miss your posts. I know you and Bob are really keeping busy, but I miss you here on the threads. Holly

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Ok, I'm back. I am having difficulties signing on to AIM and I guess I will probably have to take this hunka junk back to the shop. When I had it at the shop, they discovered a worm virus called "Rebates" (DON'T click on that one) and had to wipe everything out including AIM so if I can't get back on that one, will have to take it back. Does DG have a PC forum?

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

YES, Judy, it does.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Heya! I just updated my "Haves" list with 50+ packets received in the 2010 "piggy swap." Please post requests on this thread (I can't keep up with Dmails as easily). Thanks!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

also just put together a couple packs of Salvia coccinea that I need to add to my list. I think the cultivar is probably 'Forest Fire' since last year's plant was a volunteer & that's what was planted near that spot the previous year. It's a nice deep clear red.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hey--Beck--check Jill's copy/pasted list of all the extra seeds from the other swap--there's Hibiscus there a-plenty

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yeah, but I'm not certain any of those packets are H. moscheutos (hardy hibiscus)... but I know I've got some in my stash and possibly some still out in the garden... LOL... already cold treated!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

And Bec--
I have always had the Tall (5'-6') Red Perennial Hibiscus. The white on that I dug away from the clump of the red ones made it through and had ONE bloom on it and made ONE seed-pod. I could share a few of those with you too.

While the red one I have will take about 3-4 years to bloom--and is a different bloom (single with 5 petals)--the white one is like all other per. Hibs. Just that it also grows tall.

This is what the red one looks like.

Here is the white one---the one I moved....and it's single bloom it produced.
I am happy about that--as thee huge clump of the red ones was, totally, obliterating the small clump of the white one.

edited to add--looks like there were other flower buds behind the open bloom. So--it had a few flowers, but still, only ONE seed pod.

That's lovely! Looks familiar.. I think there's a cultivar with that pattern of pink tips, 'Southern Belle' perhaps.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

I have reserve packets of most of my, Lady's, Carolyn and Ronnie's seeds from the Pa Swap as well as a nice group from Blue Spiral and ones donated from everyone else to bring here.

Stormy, Sallyg wants Melampodium seeds. I d-mailed her to ask you if any were left.

I love this plant, it blooms all summer, and the seeds are easy to collect.

Thumbnail by ladygardener1
Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I love the Melanpodium as well. Full sun--no problem! Draught? No problem!....100* heat--No problem!

Besides--it grows in a huge clump amd blooms it'd head off. I never took seeds....bummer! This plant is sold as a "premium" annual--therefore $3 a pot.

Jill--somewhere--way back--someone ID'd the white/pinkish Hibiscus, but I don't know where to look right now.
I don't think it was the name you mentioned....

G.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I found the name of the white/pink Hibiscus. Of all places-- on the envelope where the seeds are. DAH!

Species: Moscheutos
Cultivar: Luna Bush

I have very, very few seeds.....Not going to bring them and bag them, but if you MUST have a few--I will share.
The main problem with the red and white Hibiscus seeds is that, somehow, these Hibiscus weevi lsget inside the seeds and eat out thee germ. Then they just hide in there....I have NO idea at what stage of the bud development they get in there--but it must be before the seed pods form--so maybe already in the bloom? As eggs?

It is a pain to get them all killed. SO! As a result--many of these Hibiscus seeds will have a hole at one end--kind of looks like a bead....The hole is where the weevil was--and also where the germ was...
***Do not plant these seeds!!!!! I don't believe that they can germinate.....as in--NO GERM......

This is from 2008.
I put all the seeds on a plate and spray them down with a Houseplant insecticide and cover them tight with plastic. Then I shake the plate now and then and they all come crawling out. It takes a while--and is disgusting!
The are no where to be seen while the seeds are drying on the plate in the open--but when you spray--look out!

Anyone know when they enter the buds/pods and what can be done to stop it?
I did spray the growing tips a couple of times with Neem. I think it helped a bit--but not entirely.

UGH!

I don't think I get those in my hibiscus seeds... but I've had something similar prevent me from harvesting any good hollyhock seeds.

I'm sorting through more seeds... bagged up some "Hot & Spicy" sumatran basil, found some other goodies (Wild Cherry tomato, some other basils)... will have to update my list soon!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Lady, I just checked the left over seeds and sadly, there are none of your Melanpodium.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

YUP - any hibiscus seeds you have - please share...my aunt really wants to try them to see if they are hardy enough for her "secret garden" - it's very well protected, so it might work! (or maybe I'll suggest a pot so she can over-winter it in the garage)

I'll be the "left-overs" person - I'm hoping to sow lots of annuals this year, so whatever y'all have after swapping ^_^

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Stormy, That's ok. I am glad the ladies at the swap took some for their gardens. I still have some at home so Sally will be getting a envelope in the mail : )

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

^_^ ^_^ ^_^

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Please check out the newest round of additions to my list and make some requests... I like to toss at least a pack or two into everybody's goodie bag to get things started! If you don't tell me what you'll want, yuou'll get something random to keep or trade. ;-)

Jill--

I would like just a little bit of the Hollyhocks Dbl red and also the dbl. Purple. Just a bit, please!

Di you have seeds for a sweet pepper that can be stuffed--but that is banana shaped? I do not know the name.....
I have a friend who is looking for that one.....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Most of the sweet peppers that I grow are hybrids, so I don't have a stash of saved seeds for them. There are some big banana peppers that have done well for me (Bananarama, Banana Bill), but I'm thinking if you want to get any real amount of stuffing into them I'd go with something like Gypsy or Carmen (hybrid mainstays of my pepper patch)

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Hey Jill, put me down for
Hibiscus cannabinus
Hibiscus coccineus
Hibiscus laevis
Formosa lily.

Thanks, Buttoneer

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Ok, here is my seed list.

Rose Campion
Tithonia
Datura tatula (white with purple center)
Cassia marilandica (Hardy to zone 5-6)
Cassia hebecarpa (the little one) (hardy to zone 5-6)
Purple salsify (Hardy)
Moon & Stars Watermelon (Pa. Amish Heirloom)
Purple lunaria
Birthwort (Hardy Aristolochia said to have caused miscarriages)
Variegated yucca
Delaware Beach Peas
Cinnamon Vine (Hardy)

Please dmail me privately with requests & I'll package them up, plus
I'll be bringing extra. Thanks. Buttoneer

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Buttoneer, I'll check to see if there's enough of the H. cannibinus to split beween you & Sally. I'd love to try Cinnamon Vine (hoping 3rd time will be the charm), and I'm wondering if I'd have better luck with Lunaria if I direct-sowed it... Does yours reseed?

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Jill, my Lunaria has been self sowing for years, and all over the place. It does take 2 years to bloom. I am always pulling out 1st year plants.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've been winter sowing lunaria (in a container), and seedlings didn't survive the following winter, so I'm thinking I might have better luck if I sowed the seeds directly in a little garden patch. Thanks!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I'd only need a few H cannabinus, one plant would be plenty.
Established Lunaria should reseed like crazy, IME. I'll try to remember to bring you some yearlings later too, surely we'll have a chance for a plant swap sometime. (I know Roses R Red has a plan but that just going to be too far for me.)

Athens, PA

Not sure what Stormy has left of the seeds I sent to her, however I would be interested in:

(Gitagal) Grandpa Ott MG
(Gitagal) Purple Coneflower
(Gitagal) White Coneflower

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Carolyn, if you want MGs, I can send you a big packet of mixed ones... knew I forgot to put something on my list!

Athens, PA

Critter - I would definitely be interested!

Thanks!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

I have a good amount of seeds left from Carolyn and Lady's offerrings and almost a duplicate set of mine. Here is the link again. Everyone, please ignore the names from the other swap and the words that say gone. I do have most of these.

Here's my list of seeds available for the swap. My seeds have all been prepacked and are pretty much in lots of at least 25 per pack, with some having as much as 40. If there are more than one pack available, I've indicated the # of packs after the name.

If you want fewer seeds and the single pack has been spoken for, maybe you can write to whomever claimed it and see if they are willing to split it with you. I had to prepack them all in order to separate them for both swaps. Unless otherwise noted, all flowers are perennials, except for some of the poppies, which are self seeding annuals.

Let's have some fun here and beautify our gardens!!

(Zone 7a)

Hi Critter, Stormy and fellow seed swappers - I understand that Stormy is heading over to the Frederick swap with some of my seeds for trading, and I have got seeds coming out of my ears right now. Sooooo, if anyone feels an urge they cannot overcome to send me some seeds, Stormy, could you send them to Soulgardenlove instead of me? Her house burned down and the workers rebuilding it are reducing what's left of her garden to another kind of disaster area.

Wishing everyone lots of fun at the Frederick get together,

Karen

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Karen, I'm sure that we can put a nice group of seeds together for Soulgardenlove.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Buttoneer, Of the 7 poppies that you requested, I have 5 for you. The 2 Danish Flags are gone. I also have the Rudbeckia and Tritoma set aside for you. The Sunflowers are also gone.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey, could one of our swap attendees volunteer to be a "seed angel" for SoulGardenLove, putting together a selection of seeds she could use? I'm willing to send them along to her after the swap, but I get a little too distracted with other details during the event, so I'm not the best choice to be anybody's seed fairy.

and while we're on the topic -- does anybody else need a seed angel? also, if you're acting as a seed angel for somebody, please let me know for whom so I can have a goodie bag/box to use for their seeds. Thanks!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Columbines... saw them on a couple of "want" lists... I'll try to get to digging them out of my fridge stash (older seeds but germination should be fine 'cause they've been stored in the fridge).

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Hi Guys I finally put up a Have list over on the Have/Want thread.
There isn't a lot there. But check it out. If you have any questions just ask and I can post pictures of anything you think you might be interested in.

The only thing I'm looking to get are more Zinna seeds.

Sally & Buttoneer, I have lost the Hyacinth Bean Seeds. I put them away so I would have them for this swap and now I can't seem to find them. I will keep looking but if anyone else has these I might need some, myself. LOL

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

stormy--

Can't remember if i already asked you......
Could I please have a few seeds from the Yellow Foxglove? (Digitalis Grandoflora)
I so enjoyed my pink ones last Summer! Just a bummer that I should remember to seed them in the Fall.....:o(

I also have an assortment of older seeds from a few different Columbines (that IS Aquilegia--Yes?).
Drop me a D-mail if you are interested. I will not have these bagged up to share--just not sure if they will grow---also, don't have enough of them....

Thanks, Gita
