They take mine too. There are some that can be nailed to a tree but they have wood bases and squirrls ate a wood bird feeder of mine so I wont waste the money.
I add Cayenne to the bird sees too, birds dont seem to mind, squirrls leave it alone.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Squirrels don't like safflower seeds. They are white. The birds like them but the tree rats leave them alone.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thats good to know.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i have two bird seed houses up with two suet cages on each - the poles have a baffle on them and any squirrels are on the ground - no problemo

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The squirrels will eat the safflower if nothing else is available.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

When I had feeders, I used to put out corn for the squirrels, and peanuts for the Jays--then they left the seed in the feeders alone and everyone was full ^_^

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I have a feeder with sunflower seeds and one with safflower seeds. The birds never go without that way. I don't mind feeding the squirrels, just don't want them to everything.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

For som saintly reason we dont have as many squirrls this year.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Maybe there is a fisher prowling the area. They will go after squirrel nests and they are vicious things. Giant weasels. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/10/science/10fish.html?_r=1

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

had fishers living in my yard a few years ago - haven't seen or heard one in a while

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Any one know where you can order a fisher/giant weasel that eats squirrels?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Lots of giant weasels in DC.

South Hamilton, MA

Fishers are scary. Squirrels are welcome on anything on the ground, but I don't like them on the feeders.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

fisher's main diet is squirrels - when they were here all the tree rats disappeared - they are back so i guess someone will be back for dinner soon - of course they scarred off the wood ducks too which i was not happy about.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

O I wouldn't want anything that scares birds either wha but after Damien ate the finch feeder while I was away (yes the feeder as well as the seed) methinks I need a ferocious predator.... like a wolf or a mountain lion or a grizzly bear or a dragon.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

sasquatch?

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

dnut--how do you know it was Damien? Maybe word got out in the territories that you were away in the desert, and your place became the party house

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

LOL Phoebes!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

:O Phoebes. If that is the case though, then these were dump party peoples cuz if it was me rather than eating a plastic bird feeder I would have raided the secret pantry with the Italian liqueurs and chocolate ;) wha methinks sasquatches are very evolved. That is why they don't hang with us. I don't think they hunt/eat squirrels. I will ask though this summer as I'm hoping to meet one ^_^

Dahlia - look at my first bloom amidst the freeze!!!

What a happy looking flower.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice! But she looks lonely!

Leafminers on the tomato??

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

YIPPEE! OUTSTANDING DonnieB!!! ^_^

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

These are the tomatoes next to the dahlia trellis that I didn't cover during the 28 degree/10 degree wind chill period. They were next to the house and got some good sun during the days.

Thanks, Dahlia. I'll post on the dahlia forum shortly!

My brugmansias in full bloom that are located just to the left of the dahlia trellis didn't fare as well.........

mmmmmmm fresh tomatos mmmmmm I'm very tired of the tomato-flavoured cardboard orbs I've been eating lately sigh.

edit: forgot to say don't call them 'tomato-flavoured cardboard orbs' out loud in front of the veggie guy at the store. Veggie guys are very sensitive about their veggies in the time of the cold and the dark. ps It's even worse to call the stuff under the spinach sign 'snot'. (sorry about saying snot with my outside voice but it came out of my mouth at the store before I could stop it, blush)

close-up of the brug leaves....

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

WOWSER the brug is taller than your house! I'm going to try growing one in a container and storing it in my cold room for the winter. Note to self: Get a BIG container.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I think it will rallly for sure DonnieB.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

and the sancheezia under the brug......

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I think it will too, Dahlia. Most things here come back after a freeze if you give them a chance. I'll wait a bit until new leaves come out and then I'll whack it way back to the new growth.

Here are the tomatoes that are away from the house that I covered every night. One very cold night the sheet blew off the plant. I'm in "wait and see" mode.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

My amaryllis and Greek oregano in Sam fared well on the sunporch!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Those last toms look barely kissed by Jack. Jack needs some time to deliver the big killing smackaroo and it looks like the sheet stayed on long enough

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

and last, but not least of the freeze survivors........my new green bean seedlings seem ok for now. They were covered, but had to do without a lot of light for more than a week, so the jury's still out on them. I have another pot as well, but there are relatively few up in comparison.

Thumbnail by DonnieBrook
Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I'm hopeful, Dahlia, but all of the plants were deprived of light for a lot of the time in that week. The plants are looking rather sickish and unprettiful!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Another woed bout Fishers, they also love domestic pets.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

louise it is just not fair you can post those pictures:)

South Hamilton, MA

Yes fishers do. Cats were disapperaing around the 'dogtown' area of gloucester. MA 5 or 6 yrs ago & it was found to be a fisher.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

yep.
