Aroids and Pirates

Trina, I heard if you sow the seeds in a peat moss and sand mix and keep moist on a heat mat at 75-80 degrees they will germinate better. I have an incubator for hatching eggs that I use for the tropical stuff that needs a controled temperature. It works good and the thermostat keeps it where it needs to be all the time. I put plastic baggies under the pots to catch the water run off and it stays clean, and the moisture makes it humid in there.

hhhmmm...now I wish I had an incubator...I use heating pads seems to be working pretty good for the BOP's and Passies

For what it's worth, I like watching Johnny Depp for his unique style of acting--his smart-alecky way of talking to his superiors--more so than for his looks. Nah. Too much makeup.

in most movies yeah too much make up...Finding Neverland was good though too
woohoo the bedtime countdown has begun! Yeah

Yeah..ok monstera seeds? easy, moderate, or hard to get going? LariAnn your expertise is needed.

sorry been busy using the gift card MIL gave me...got some aroids, orchids, still shopping LOL

Aroids! That's how this thread started. Good. Back to aroids.

Monstera deliciosa is easy to grow from seed if it is fresh. Much easier to start from cuttings. The cultivars can only be started by cuttings.

Dave? Is it easy to tell deliciosa from borsigna (whatever)? The seeds I started were sold as deliciosa, but then I read that they are commonly confused. My leaves stay small, but it could be stunted, so any way to tell?

Keaau, HI

Hi Jsmom! The juveniles of Monstera deliciosa will look very similar to the 'Borsigiana' cultivar. Over time the type species will get large leaves (3' x 2 1/2') which have many holes along the mid-rib. The 'Borsigiana' cultivar is a dwarf that will not get leaves so large, and there will not be so many holes along the mid-rib.

I'll just have to take a cutting on mine and grow it out as big as I can get it :).... I don't even want to think of what the root mass looks like in the current pot, it has grown in it for maybe 10 years, and when I recently broke down a 10 year old tree philo, (same pot for maybe 3) I know how hard those old roots can be to untangle :). I had set a phalaenopsis down in the pot of monstera for the summer and when I went to retrieve it, the monstera had stapled the phal's pot down with a big strong root. I let it keep the pot, lol.

Does anyone else have trouble with aroid cuttings in winter? I never noticed because I do most of my cuttings in spring and summer, but this year, I have been growing more and have lower than normal success rates just kind of starting in mid-November. I'm trying to figure out if this is normal or if I have something else going on.

Keaau, HI

Can you show the plant?

zone 6a, KY

I guess it's kind of small for an old plant, but it is what it is.

Hi Jsmom, that does look like the juvenile leaves of Monstera deliciosa.
To help the plant develop, it should be in a much larger pot.

And it would help if I quit whacking it. I only just added my first attempt at a filled tube totem maybe a month ago so it can climb. I think I like the stick totems better. It also has all 5 of the original seedlings in there. I'll see what I can find in a big pot. That one is 5 gallons, but not big for a monstera (or 5). How big should I move it into? I know the plant must like me, its one of my oldest.

I think it is adorable.. 3jsmom

Me, too. It has been a long time since I could make my plants any kind of priority. I am glad to be able to take better care of them this year. Even in the cramped quarters and with my whacking anything that drags the ground, the little monstera is like 3.5 feet wide. Now I am hoping it will grow upward. I need to find a bigger pot. Does Lowe's have those BIG plastic pots? I haven't looked for a couple years.

For a bigger pot, should I be looking for wider shorter, or deeper taller?

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

3jsmom...I did some searching a while back for the same question. Most of the info I found said to use a 10 gallon container for the monstera. Most also said a 3 to 5 gallon pot would suffice for the first couple years, and that they like to be just slightly root bound. Most of the 10Gal pots I found tend to be almost as wide as they are deep...gives a better base of support for the height of the plant.

Thank you. Mine is way overdue a bigger pedestal :).

Yea, I was wanting to bust them for having a cultivated white bird of paradise in a scene (www.imdb.com); problem is when is a plant officially discovered vs. when a plant has seeds sent here and there, even if a botanist has not yet named it.
I've had roommates ask me how come I can spot yadda yadda 1/4 mile down the road but manage to miss the tomato sauce now staining the kitchen tile grout?!

Is it time to plant the Aroid seeds yet?

Keaau, HI

Hi Ridesredmule!

Okay if it's indoors. Soil temperatures need to remain above 60 degrees F.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I might be able to handle that. Temp is set at 70 in home so no problem.
Geting too old for it to be any cooler. Arthritis sets in, jooints ache...lol
Seed beds today. Think I will plant one today. May not be too early. I am ready for Spring.
