That's cute Ric!!
Favorite family Christmas cookies
Betty Crocker Rum Balls (Betty Crocker's Christmas Cookbook 1982)
3 cups finely crushed vanilla wafers (about 75)
2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup finely chopes pecans or walnuts (about 4 ounces)
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup rum
1/4 cup light corn syrup
granulated or powdered sugar
Mix crushed wafters, powdered sugar, pecans and cocoa. Sample rum for freshness (tee hee).Stir in rum and corn syrup. Shape mixture into 1 inch balls. Roll in granulated surger. Refrigerate in tightly covered container several days before serving. Makes about 5 dozen
Burbon or brandy balls: substitute 1/2 cup burbon or 1/2 cup brandy for the rum.
dahiafeets note: these are very sweet so rolling in granulated not powdered sugar is better methinks. These make a nice gift in a pretty glass jar with a lid and big poofy bow on it.
Thanks! Yum! That's a definite for Christmas here, then.
The kids will love it, loosen those little suckers up so they will forget all about presents. Just kidding, just kidding.
Cute story, Ric---love kids that age---they're so creative.
Polly, you made me laugh......when I was 10, I got semi-smashed on those things at a neighbors house, then went home and was very, very sick. I still to this day don't eat them. lol
Wow Pixie that's not a good holiday memory!
LOL, Pixie.
My grandson once said when he was grown up he was going to drink responsibly like Grammy, only two Genesee Cream Ales at a time. So, I let him have a sip. Ok, no Genesee Cream Ales. You should have seen the look on his face. it was a hoot. How on earth can you drink that?
JR and I were supposed to make these Saturday, since the snow storm interfered we finally got it done today. They are great for kids to build and consist of:
An Oreo cookie with the top removed
a Hershey's kiss unwrapped
a Maraschino cherry with stem dipped in melted chocolate
a couple of almond slices
and a couple of dots of red icing.
I believe Stormy from MA forum posted the idea, we had a ball! Ric
drooooooool
I prefer 'Over the lips, to the gums. Look out stomach, here she comes.'
great job.. they look yummy!
'One second on the lips.........forever on the hips!" lol
For those (like Jumper) who like to make cutout cookies of Christmas Trees, Angels, etc.: here is a recipe from James Cooper's food column for a Sour Cream cutout cookie mix that is much better than the usual blah-tasting dough.

And Dahlia--I mentioned your rum ball recipe to my wife, but since we didn't have any vanilla wafers to crush, she made me spend 20 minutes searching the web to find a recipe for them that didn't involve smashing up already made cookies. They were ok, but I'm sure yours are too!
What was the substitute Don? Variations are good.
Jumper & family arrived early this morning. Her DH is the cookie baker & they brought some with them. Have to nibble carefully as the diet will go out the window. It is his mother's recepie & his sister refuses to take the trouble.
We haven't had an OVEN for 6 mos - just got one last weekend.
ahhhhhhhhhhhh... um me too please ^_^
too cute!
