put it out in the middle of that field where it will get full sun all day! : )
always remember that blooms stalks come from tips and that new branches will form around a tip when that tip pushes out an inflo or when that tip is damaged or pruned off (i.e. taking a cutting). that pretty much sums up how plumeria grow.
Plumeria rubra grown from seed....
Unfortunitelly my plumy tipped over and 2 of the branches snapped off. Now what do I do? Treat the two broken pieces as a cutting?
yep. treat them as cuttings and root. i think there are instructions in the sticky thread.
In your zone expect flowers from any given plant every 3 to 5 years.
Learning this moved me to obtain a huge collection.
I have about 25 to 40 plants in bloom every year.
You had either a false inflo or it didnt have the energy to support the flowers and thus dropped it.
Its also sometimes a ph or hormone thing.
Treat her like a tree due to your climate, large pot and rich well draining soil.
Get her setup and check your soils ph.
If its around 6.5 to 7.0 perfect
They prefer it a little more acidic so buy som ph up and ph down depending on your water supply
too many folks think water is water, not true!
Use a ph kit to get the ph optimal then you will avoid chlorosis due to ph lockout.
The wrong ph can prevent the plant from benefitting from all your love and well spent $$ on nutrients.
Use epsom salts to add magnesium and some sulphur.
water her in and a week later 20-20-20
2 weeks later move to bloom booster & you will get blooms
The pisser of it is timing to get them in the warmer months.
I have many indoor wintertime blooms and usually fail to enjoy the flowers true colors.
I hope I havent overloaded you.
Good luck!
Ive had many good professors teach me this stuff and a lot of self learning with the Philadelphia cold weather.
5 months outdoors then 7 in every year is a lot of work.
But I love my babies lol!
Well thank you very much Malestrom~!!! Its always great to see a more experienced person hand out there own info on how to proceed with these fantastic plants.
Thanks again Malestrom....
Barry, I happened on your thread, and I was admiring your patience. Having waited 7 years for the inflo. and lost it due to spidermites/disease. What a shame. I've a rubra plumie that's making inflo. In my zone plumies get the luxury of being out door 9 months, thus a chance for me to get them to flower is better than other temperate zone growers/gardeners.
My plumerias occassionally suffer rust due to humid condition that render them more vulnerable. But I didn't experience spidermites. Hope you get the infestation under control. Best of lucks.
Here is my rubra plumie cultivar "India" first inflo. currently:
Spider mites arethe bane of all us indoor gardeners
I spray my plants down 2 weeks before bringing them inside
I also use a systemic in the spring.
Cut off all leaves and wash the plant down with soapy water and a soft cloth b4 bringing them in 4 the winter
This will get you about 3 to 4 months bug free
then its infestation time lol!
I'm glad to 'hear' that preventive measure works for you. Knock on woods! Like I said, haven't had that problem with spidermites on plumies here. I found having the air circulates by fan while being indoor over the winter helps as well.
p.s. "India" is a cultivar; that implies it was a cutting propagated, and not from seed. I thought I ought to clarify.
Here it's (Other tropical flowers are that of Mandevillas et al).
India is a wonderful plumeria

Well thank you so much Lily_love.... In my zone since I'm not only growing Plumerias, but I have atleast 15 or more 'Epi' plants that I am constantly nurturing.
These 'Epi' plants that I have are the start of my problem. I've had to throw away an 'Epi' Oxypetallum since it got so infested with spider mites to were I became just way too disgusted by the way it looked. There was absolutely no way for me to cure the plant of these nasty pests.
Over this spring I ordered several Plumy seeds from Plumeria Paradise and right now I have about 10 decent looking seedlings. Who knows if the species of the seeds I ordered will actually look the same as its given photo.
I'm guessing that my problem will get solved after I move to a more temperate climate. ;-) Until then, I try to make things work in my zone.
Thanks so much for your input Lily_love~!!!

barrysewall - have you thought about ordering a plumeria cultivar that is rooted or grafted? then, you will not have to wait as long for blooms.
Hey tucsonplumeriaz....
Yes, I have thought about that and of course I wouldn't have to wait as long to see blooms but I must be too naive to want to take that route. I just recently ordered a plumeria J-4 cutting hoping that will root for me along with the other two rubra stems that snapped off of my 3ft rubra plant.
By the way, are rooted cuttings pricey and were is the best place to purchase them?

check out http://www.floridacolors.com/ florida colors nsy. the prices are very reasonable for grafted plumies. and sometimes they have plumies that can be shipped with inflos. nothing like instant gratification.
i also got rooted plant from http://www.junglejacksplumerias.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=29 jungle jacks.
Hey tucsonplumeriaz,
I ordered 2 grafted plumeria plants from Florida Colors and I recieved them today! One of them is Tahitian Sunset and the other is Japanese Lantern. Now I have to pick up some potting soil from our local nursery.
Can you also tell me if Malathion is a bad insect killer for someone not too familiar with the chemical? I've spoken to this guy named Kris from Epiforums and he's explained to me that he uses Malathion at times for his own use.
Have a good day tucsonplumeriaz!
wow...those grafts look humongous! you're a couple of steps closer to blooms. woo hoo! make sure you remove the sphagnum moss before planting them the grafted plumies.
i hav not used malathion. i'd say your best bet is to just follow the instruction. i use the horticultural oil because it smothers the insects and egg and is non-toxic.
Malestrom,
From the information you gave me, I bought a pH soil tester to do a test. My results are pH 6.0.... From your information, does the pH need to be around pH 7.0 range or what should I be looking for in the test?
I have soil mender Sulfer and I also have Hydrated Lime.
Let me know what I should have for pH.
Thanks
All my plumeria are now indoors since its getting much colder out. In order for me to keep the spidermites away, I purchased this soluble botanical insecticide called AzaMax which can be used as a soil drench or as a spray. If I use it as a soil drench with my plumies, will this set back or cause the plumy to start growing again?
I need to perform this or I will have as big of a problem as I did last winter....
Please let me know if its A-Ok to use it....

Do I have to repot my plumeria? This past summer the wind tipped it over several times and now I only have two branches growing from the inflow instead of four. Plus my plant fell out of the pot itself so I was able to view the roots and they didn't look very root bound....
Let me know please.
Barry
