Possible rough weather for the Lowcountry

Also, ice doesn't get below 32F degrees, air does, so there's more damage without that layer of ice or snow as protection.

now that I didn't know either.

I have a few things that were sprayed with FP and they still look good while nothing else in my garden looks good this week. These may just be slow to melt so time will tell but they are a Ti plant that I sprayed heavily to use as a test and a tibochina grandiflora - it was a young plant and because of it's small size I could really give it a good covering with the FP.

Let's all pray for an early spring.

I'll second that on an early Spring. My fear right now is the ground temperature. We haven't gotten out of the 30's in a few days, and these nights in the teens are probably doing more damage to my plants beneath the surface than I'd like to even think about. I should have mulched; but who knew after that warm November? Guess I'll find out next spring. Fingers crossed.

I'm ready for spring too. I hate to think what this cold weather is going to do to my electric bill. When it gets real cold, the heat pump goes on auxiliary heat and I dread to think what that is going to cost. Besides, I miss sitting out on my front porch in the morning with my coffee. Was 24 this morning! Did get up to almost 50 today and 52 tomorrow, but this cold spell is not over until the middle of next week.

my SDB irises will bloom so much better, but I worry about all my hostas in pots. no clue how my cannas will do. Don't have as many tender perennials and shrubs as y'all do, though.

Haven't been in our house long enough to have many shrubs and perennials so far. Am worried about the young citrus trees we planted about two months ago. Two have lost almost all their leaves....the tangerine and orange tree. The Meyer lemon has some leaves but they are turning yellow. The ruby red grapefruit is holding it's own. This citrus stuff is all new to me as everything else down here.

Bad sign if the leaves fell off. Were they falling off before the cold or were they nice looking then bam, they fell off??

The leaves were falling off before the cold.

They must have gotten shocked or lack of water this fall. I've noticed that citrus trees show stress long after it happened and for that matter they don't just look good in a day or two when you water or fertilize them. I would fertilize your trees in late Feb. with something that has a decent mineral content to get them off to a good start. You'll probably get a new flush of leaves in March so you need to have them ready to go when it warms up. They make fertilizer for citrus trees so get that but not the spikes. Spikes don't work well in my opinion.

I have successfully used the Hi Yield brand citrus fert. in the past but I am going to try the Espoma brand this year as it is largely organic.

I agree, the sticks do not work well in some coastal soils; the fert. never migrates all over like it is supposed to. You wind up with a too heavy concentration in a few places and none in others.

I went to Ace Hardware over on St. Simons Island and they told me it could be our soil that they used to bring in to build up our lot. We are two streets from the marsh. The man out there said so many times the fill dirt is of very few neutrients (sp) We also got some Citrus fert. and black cow. We mixed black cow around the orange tree and decided to hold off on the citrus fert. until spring. The black cow is fert. and the gentleman at the hardware store said he uses it around all his plants, trees and shrubs. So I guess I will just wait and see if it buds. We have had ample rain and also have irrigation system installed. Guess that's about all I can do for now.

Do y'all think this is about all I can do for now??
