While I was cleaning out an office in Fort Gordon, GA we found this beauty. It was 3-4 inches from its front legs to the back of its abdomen. I took this picture with my phone from standing while it was on the carpet before my Sgt. came in and smashed it :(. I would like to know what it is.

his appears to be a female southern house spider, Kukulcania hibernalis (family Filistatidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/yk3m7u9 for an image. They are quite common in southern states; large specimens cab deliver a painful (but not dangerous) bite. BTW, I was stationed at Ft. Gordon in 1967 - I imagine that it has changed somewhat...
