3rd Annual DG Christmas Craft Workshop - Project #5

Victoria Harbour, ON

Snowman and Friend

Here's what I thought we would do for those who are finding time on their hands to do their projects now...

I will start a project on each of the projects offered to you and give basic starting information...

Will also make a thread for " 3rd Annual DG Christmas craft workshop - photo's only" where everyone can put their finished piece on so we can ohhh and ahhhh...

Is that ok?

This one is mine, too, so I'll be glad to have the instructions. Stacey and I are working on them on Friday.

Well then we'd best be posting some instructions..

REMEMBER: Rough front of each board is what you want to use..the roughness will give it character

Paints colors needed (acrylics) $$$ store brand ok

off white (white is fine if you can't get off white)

black

cream (misture of straw yellow and off white will make this color - only used for brim of the hat..)

Burnt orange (not bright orange)

Straw yellow (not bright yellow - if you've already got bright yellow put a tough of brown in it to tone it down in color) or use what you have..lol

Dark Green

Maroon (his hat and heart isn't bright red- if you've bright red then a wee touch of black will tone it down as well)

Step 1: Optional

Either stain the back and sides of each piece is you've stain just sitting around, now don't go purchase any, you could pick up a small acrylic paint container in brown, dilute slightly with a bit of water and brush to the back and sides... let dry!

****if you don't want a more rustic looking piece then jump ahead of the class..lol...and do the following...

Step 2:

Basecoat as follows...you might want to give a few coats..all depends on what brand of paint you are using wether it will need more than one...

IMPORTANT:

An interesting thing when working with red..you could give 10 coats and it still might not cover..trick of trade: take some white and black and make a med. gray tone..paint the pieces that are red/maroon with this gray first...let dry and basecoat in red/maroon..you will see a much richer red/maroon doing this...

You can place the band on your snowman to get where you want the snowman to stop and the hat to start, remove and in the middle where the band would have been draw a line..that way you'll know what to paint which color...

NOTE: when you basecoat each piece you are basecoating the edges but NOT the back of the snowman..you want the stain or the brown to be your finish BUT that being said if you didn't stain or paint brown, then you'd want to basecoat the back of your snowman as well with off white...

****because the tree and hat brim might be attached to snowman at angles that can be seen from the back 'unpainted' maybe add a bit of the base color to all those decorative pieces...

hat/heart - maroon/red
nose (2) - burnt orange
tree - dark green
Star/penguin feet - goldy color - I use straw yellow
brim of hat - cream color
Penguin - off white (basecoat ENTIRE penguin with off white-will make painting him so much easier)

let the pieces comletely dry then get sandpaper and sand a bit on those cut edges I made for you on the side of each piece..as well, you can slightly age here and there on each piece by sanding just a bit more...

The penguin..he's now white right?
with a fairly straight edge brush or sponge brush, basecoat back of penguin in black and try very hard to add black to about 1/4 or more around the edges of the front..this creates the penguin look

Stacey and I painted ours on Saturday and Sunday and she put hers together. since mine had to travel home I kept it in pieces and will glue it here at home. Liking what I see! I did the #3 two and am giving it as a gift to my DD for Christmas. Will post a picture when I get it put together but probably wont be until next weekend.

Looking forward to seeing photo's Janice...how's Stacey doing, had so hoped she'd stay and gab with us..know she loves Christmas almost as much as I do...hope you gave her a hug for me..

Well, I hope you won't be mad at me when I post pics Betty, but I sorta Staceytized it......I glued it all together today actually and need to do a few modifications to hide imperfections, but when I am all done I will post pics.

BETTY-THANK YOU for sending this to me-I had a tone of fun with it. I did it with metallic paints and did some other stuff to it that I really like since I couldn't get it to look right like yours does above. SO I took it and made it a Stacey original. I was hoping to see pics of other peeps on here, but maybe I M in the wrong area??

I dunno-I am also working on stuff for my mom as she told me that I would be in for a hurtin' if I spent any $$ on her for Xmas since we have less than $0....so I have been making her Xmas decor to replace the stuff that she lost a few years ago due to water damage. Mom (Janice) was happy to get a sled as part of her Xmas pressie and another one is going to my mom that I M sure she will love as well....

Stacey how wonderful to see you post, you just made my day!!! and that is going some seeing there is a blizzard out there...

I'm glad you made it a Stacey project...that's what it's all about...

Think more people should make gifts, regardless if it's cooking, crafts etc. - that truly is what Christmas should be all about..given from the heart...

OMG you hadn't given them their sleighs last year? no wonder they are thrilled to get them this year...see our summer workshop paid off didn't it?

Why don't you do those little sets of trio candles, they'd make wonderful gifts...

Just got back from work, transferred calls here because of the storm..getting sewing machine out, into jammies, homemade soup is on, fireplaces both upstairs and downstairs are on..furries at my feet..what an enjoyable day I've planned...going to wait until around 3 and call the girls who were coming to do floral arrangements tonight to see if they'll still come or if they'd rather come tomorrow night...

Enjoy your day everyone

I'd love to see photo's Stacey..nothing like receiving hand made pressies...too bad we all didn't do it..would bring true meaning of giving of oneself...
