3rd Annual DG Christmas Craft Workshop - Project #4

Victoria Harbour, ON

Cardinal Snowman

Here's what I thought we would do for those who are finding time on their hands to do their projects now...

I will start a project on each of the projects offered to you and give basic starting information...

Will also make a thread for " 3rd Annual DG Christmas craft workshop - photo's only" where everyone can put their finished piece on so we can ohhh and ahhhh...

Is that ok?

Yes

Step 1: Optional

Either stain the back and sides of each piece is you've stain just sitting around, now don't go purchase any, you could pick up a small acrylic paint container in brown, dilute slightly with a bit of water and brush to the back and sides... let dry!

****if you don't want a more rustic looking piece then jump ahead of the class..lol...and do the following...

Colors needed:

black
burnt orange
off white or cream (snowman)
red/maroon
straw yellow

Basecoat:

If you did not do Step 1 then paint the fronts and back of each piece..maybe all did not need to be done front and back but it does offer itself as a sealant...

If you did do step one, try not to be sloppy...lol...you don't want paint here and there on the back..won't look pretty..after all this is a 'treasure' keepsake right? just kidding..know you can stay within the lines...

Hat / brim: black

nose : burnt orange

snowman: off white or cream color...I always find that just white gives the piece a stark look...

cardinal - red maroon

cardinal beek - straw yellow

Let completely dry...

With sandpaper or palm sander sand those rough edges on every piece, you just want some of the brown or the wood color to show through here and there, can even do a bit on the top of each piece..it's all up to the individual as to how primitive you like it...

Ok I have mine painted, this took three days lol have the brim of the hat glued on without to much mishap and now am trying to glue, the wing on the cardnial does it go high on the body or low? Then I will be ready to decorate and glue my cardnial on to the snow man, getting so excited to see how it will turn out. My hubby will make it where I can hang it on my door yea. Thanks again Susan

wing on the cardinal can do where you think it looks the best for YOUR project...the actual cardinal I'd say is an inch or so above the bottom of snowman..make sure you do your sanding about now...

Because I have a bradnailer I attach that way, but glue gun works same, or 'no nails' is quite strong..is you have very tiny headless nails you could nail from back side of your piece, wouldn't see it and would maybe stay together longer..anxious to see your finished project...

Happy Thanksgiving...

I will look and see what kind of nails he has. I have some epoxie glue that hold really good that I'm using, He will hang on the door on the inside of the house so shouldn't have to much weather. Thanks Susan

OK I'm threw with my snow man. I have to wait till in the morning to see if my glue is going to hold. Then Jimmy can get him where he will hang and up on the door he will go after a coat of clear coat. I'll post a picture when I've got him hung up. Thanks again Susan
