CLOSED: Fly

Iacon, Cybertron, United Kingdom

Hello everyone.

I wonder if someone would be able to identify this fly for my brother. He has a lot of them in his house, and would like to know what they are. He sent me a couple of pictures and asked me to help him identify it.

Sorry that I haven't got any more information. If necessary I can ask him more about it.

Thanks,
Autobot.

Not a fly, but an unrelated insect known as a bark louse (order Psocoptera); see http://eol.org/pages/404491 for an example. They are harmless scavengers on mould spores and organic detritus, often that found in tree bark cracks and crevices.

Those that we have (not sure if yours are the same) form a silky web covering the tree's bark, that looks almost like frost, or a coating of ice. We get many concerned calls that something is killing the tree. But we consider them beneficial - just little cleaner uppers that will move on after they've done their job. Please don't destroy them.

Ah! Thank you Suunto and Ceejaytown! I will let him know.

Thanks! :)

Forgot to say - they are under that silky web, just a munching away....
