And here's the "little house" behind the tree...has a huge pot of ginger and a tall pot of Monstera fern...plus asst. bromeliads and fern pots.......we usually cover those two each winter because they're too large to move.... All the pots you see are going under cover tomorrow.
Constructing a Temporary Greenhouse
This is the one I'll probably get in trouble for.....the new brug gh house... It's pretty tacky out along the back of the fence, but I sure got a lot of pots under it today. We don't have guests out in the backyard in winter anyway...so 3 months of ugly is worth 9 months of purty! It really does look awful, doesn't it?
This other end usually has a door.....maybe when DH gets home....but for now it's just covered in plastic...which makes it difficult to add plants. This is the gh where all the prissy plants spend the winter..... That pipe on the ground is leftovers from some other project.....I thought it ws part of ghs. Now I have to put it away too.
Sandi,
After looking at you temp greenhouses, I'm tempted to put a small one up around my one Brug in the ground instead of wrapping it with bubble wrap and using a few sets of Christmas lights as heat sources. I'm still thinking about it. The one problem would be the winds I get whistling through here. There is nothing to stop or deflect it. How did your greenhouses do in last night's wind?
Veronica....they did fine. I was worried about the wind getting under the plastic on the big one because I hadn't put the batten tape on. It did start to lift, but not enough to cause problems before I got out and secured it.. The other ghs were more protected, so didn't have any lift.
I would think with a small greenhouse, you could build a square wooden frame. Anchor the pvc pipe inside the frame onto rebar. Maybe have two hoops. You need to leave a way to raise the plastic when we get the warm days. The batten tape will keep the plastic from flying to your neighbors.
I'll try to find a pic of one I looked at that had a wooden frame at the base. It wouldn't work for me because mine are so long...and I need to be able to roll the front up....but for one tree, it should be fine. I have to secure mine with limestone bricks.
I was dreading wrapping the brugs too! I had looked at pipe insulation also. Even tho it was a lot of work, I think I'll be happy in Feb. when I pull the plastic down and have good sized brugs ready to go...
BB, you have done a super job with the purlin and batten, so your gh didn't do a doty! LOL! I am impressed and educated too!
Thanks to BigBubbles, the term "do a Dotty" has successfully been entered into the Gardenology Database!
Now, don't go doing the "happy dance!"
I am amazed and IMPRESSED!! You are AMAZING!!!!
Well, thanks for compliments! I appreciate them....
I spent the whoooolllleee day with 4 yr old grandson. Just the two of us, and we had a great time....no plants or ghs. We went to gymnastics, had lunch at Chick-Fil-A, took a nap, baked cookies for the garbage guys (long story), and made homemade noodles from recipe on DG's recipe forum. He had so much fun, he cried when his mom came to pick him up.... He'll be back tomorrow afternoon, as DD helps get ready for the Christmas Affair this weekend.
We didn't get a freeze last nite and I'm hoping we don't tonite. I need to get rest of plants under cover tomorrow morning. Weatherman said we'd probably have freeze in city around Thanksgiving, with blustery winds. 'But they've been wrong before....
And I had no idea Dave's had a gardenology database, Ms Linda!
Good idea for the greenhouse.
Just read this thread and would like to know what size PVC was used 1/2" or 3/4"?
Jerry
1/2" on the outer ghs.....3/4" on the patio
