spirea cuttings?

Galt, CA(Zone 8b)

I have been trying to propagate spirea cuttings in a variety of ways, with no success at all. (It is the Van Houtte or possibly a Bridal Wreath variety). Is there anyone here who has had success in starting new plants from cuttings? I have tried water and soil with and without rooting hormone. The cuttings were semi-hardwood.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,

Hi Tiny:
I have had success with gold mound (shir something) and another one that slips my mind. Timing is everything with the woodies. I try to take my cuttings just after they have bloomed and are putting on new wood. I take a cutting that has several nodes on the stem. I strip the leaves that would be under ground and also strip the outer bark on one side with my thumb nail. I use dip-n-grow as my rooting hormone and mix it at the strongest level.
all of my cuttings have rooted out and are now in 3.5" pots. I think the key is to have it in a growth mode. I have tried other things when blooming and they are slow and forget the winter time they just sit and say hi kind of a tease. I feel your frustration.
Being as far south as you are you should be able to still do cuttings. just make sure you have enough nodes to root from.
I hope this helps

Thank you Dave, next spring I will give it a try using your suggestions. Spirea is so beautiful, I am determined to get one going whatever it takes!

I usually take the suckers[stolens] which have a little bit of root and treat them as I would cuttings
This has worked well for me.

That is a better solution for one or two. you can also use the rock and branch technique. bend a limb down and put a rock on it to hold it down. The limb will root and you can cut it loose once it roots.

Spirea will also work with ground layering for one or 2 plants.

Propagation Take greenwood cuttings in Summer and hardwood cuttings in Winter.

These are instructions for bonsai but I use them often for plant care and propagation.
