It's like a contest... for Brug cuttings

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Sorry.. this offer has now closed...

OK..aganst my better judgement.. as usual... I'm offering cuttings of my Brugmansias for postage + 2.00 to help pay for incidentals...not the least of which is the expense of my helper to wrap... package them to you...
this one is blooming inside today.. it stays here...
The way it works.. is you have to send an e-mail to me @ GordonHawk@gmail.com with the subject of Brug cuttings for postage+ 2009
and include your address in the body of the post..
if you can do this you'll be a winner in the contest..

Looking forward to package.
We are ready. Gordon, do you use a Recipe to spray your Brugs with?
I have to get a can of Beer for them. But I was wondering if you use it
also.
Charleen

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

yes.. Charleen.. I shur do use it... I love it... must have gone through a case of beer for lots of batches ... my particular take on how it's formulated is in the recipe thread.. somewhere...
I'm looking for a revised clear version this year... as the molasses brown overspray pays havoc on my wallls .. where I live.. you don't see it much in the winter when everything is inside.. butwhen they go out... I have to scrub the painted brick down... and this summmer I repainted everything white again... maybe kayro sirup would be a clear alternative..
I spray seedlings.. and everything else also.. I just exchange the 20-20-20 ferts.. for the bloombooster as they get bigger.. and I'm looking for flowers...
works on everything... little aloe blooms

Please Give us your revised one when You get it done and we can use it too. What about Clear Karo syrup? Since we are not watching calories it should work.
Going to work mine up this afternoon. Love the Aloes. It is always nice to have a few blooms around.

Hi Gordon, I'm shaking my head. What a glutton for punishment! Of course if your helpers do all the grunt work .... It's really sweet of you to do this.

I read Charleen's and your comments on the Recipe. So I went searching for answers. This is what I found:

Corn Syrup is mostly dextrose. Of the 3 types of molasses, blackstrap molasses is best for agricultural use. But according to docgipe in this post: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/954269/ what we get off the grocery store shelf has had a lot taken out of it. Raw blackstrap molasses is the stuff to use. I found the original reference to the chemical composition of raw molasses he uses.

Quoting:
Blackstrap Molasses is often used in horticulture as a flower blooming and fruiting enhancer, particularly in organic hydroponics.

If molasses is used mainly as a flower booster in the case of Brugs (It does provide some micro-nutrients.), you could probably substitute any bloom booster or leave it out altogether since at first you want to provide a steady source of nitrogen.

I wonder if those who use the Recipe have tried it against a control group of Brugs fed in a more conventional way with a complete liquid fertilizer, but more often, such as every time they are watered. I think it has more to do with the regularity or frequency of feeding. The Recipe can get expensive especially if you have a lot of plants.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Guess We better not use Corn syrup. But I did go to store and buy the Black Strap Molasses, It is no good, or not nearly as good as Feed Molasses. I guess I could give them some Mulefeed ^_^. No I'm not going to do that. But I got the real bear and think I am going to mix it up, poor litle things need something.
I'll see what Gordon says too. Thank you, Veronica.
Charleen

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Thanks Veronica.. I was wondering the benefit the black strap was giving...lots of micronutrients it seems..rather than only benefiting from the sugar...
Charleen.. that's what the links were saying.. that your feed molasses was blackstrap molasses.. if you can find it in that form.. your're saving
yes Veronica.. thatwasmythoughtwhenIstartedusingtherecipe,If I had doneanythingtotheplants...spraying just water with regular frequency..I'd have made them about just as happy..... I'm going to a hydroponic food addative w/ tea tree oil this winter inside... to help with the wall discoloration.
well..last week I went through a double hernia operation... I posted the cutting requests 3 hours before it was starting.. thinking I was going to be up sending out boxes the next day...
well it's very similar to being in a knife fight.. and getting hit a bout three times in the stomach.. they repaired both of them... and we're getting back so I can start starting tomorrow.. [ with my assistant ] here's 4 tubs of cuttings awaiting... so they will have been in water. awhile.... some have at this time...already developed white bumps and could really be potted up on arrival if you find these.. there are a dozen or so trees yet to be pruned and put in water...

Gordon sorry about your hernia surgery. My son had it done a couple of years ago and I remember it was a lot worse than he had expected. Haven't gotten cuttings from you before, so don't know how you do postage. I did send you an email with my address before the deadline. Will send the 2.00 plus postage as soon as I know where and how much. Thanks!! Charlotte

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Thanks for the information. I have made my Recipe and have already used it. The last cuttings still look perky so I must have done something right. I hope your surgery has helped you greatly. Don't overdo it, I'm sure you have already heard this but
Best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery on the way.

Hell G.
long time no see! I haven't been breeding brugs for several years now but will this summer again. Maybe we could do some trades down the road. I still have some of my crosses I haven't ever sent out. I just got some seeds from Barzil and they are already up... Now that we have moved I have more room to play. LOL 22+ acres... If I can keep the Goats from getting out. LOL

want some perennial hibiscus seeds. I have 150+ mama plants planted for next year. all colors and species mixed.
Larry

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Ouch! Hope you're recovering well by now, Gordon. That's a lot of stairs to climb with stitches...

Read thru the "recipe" comments and wanted to add: I used the recipe this summer during the hot TX drought and I had very few bugs....and nothing sucking the life out of the leaves. Had a few grasshoppers, but was pleasantly surprised not to have to deal with any mites. Not just brugs, but my other plants also benefitted from the recipe. I didn't use the Tea tree oil, because I couldn't find it at first... My only complaint was the Epsom salts kept settling and clogging the sprayer. Someone on DG suggested using warm water to the salts to dissolve and that seemed to help. Not sure if it was the "recipe" or Messenger, but I plan to try the same regime this spring...until I run out of Messenger.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Well...CONGRATLATIONS... EVERY ONE WAS A WINNER...
Even a few that had written to the wrong place or had asked early... also were included in the winners circle.. Congratulations.. A few notes on being a winner...
1 ---> cuttings were added to boxes without concern or knowledge to whom they were
going.. by myself.. and my helper..
2----> the boxes were of a few different types... in size and shapes.. as were the cuttings
as a result they were filled through available accomodating space and not
how many they had already received...
3----> there was a slight effort to have the number alocated be simillar to others but
this was also influenced ... I'd noticed by the relative position of each box in the
arrangment of two score boxes together
4 ----> there were seldom enough of each cutting to provide one foreach box so the
assortment will vary greatly within each
SO.. just enjoy the ones you have..
without concern for the ones you don't have.. or the ones someone else has
All packages went out today ...just before noon excepting to Veronica and Brenda and to two addresses I recieved yesterday of ones that had asked weeks before ... these will go out at a later time...
