Asparagus Fern (not Foxtail)

(Tracey) Mobile, AL(Zone 8b)

I know I'm crazy but once I took a cutting of asparagus fern and placed it in soil. I found out quickly that is NOT the way to propagate it!!!

Can someone tell me how? Can it be propagated from the "berries" it produces? I have a lot of them but want to know if I pot them up, will they actually sprout, or would I again be wasting my time?

Please advise....

If you dig into the ground under the plant, you will find little 'onion-like' bulbs, which you can dig up and replant into a pot or another spot in your yard.

Asparagus fern can be readily propagated from seed. The seed should be removed from the fleshy berries, placed in a suitable sowing medium in a warm spot or with bottom heating of about 75°F and kept moist.
Hey, why not try it - you've got nothing to lose if you get the seeds for free!

Thanks Kay,

I appreciate your input. I am rather new at this and need to ask what you mean by this..."bottom heating of about 75°F"? How do I bottom heat? If it were spring or summer I would guess that placing them on the patio would be a good idea...Maybe it would be best if I save the seeds until spring and try it there..

Do I open the fleshy berries and remove the seed to save it? Or do I leave it be until I'm ready to plant?

To get bottom heat, you can buy a propagation mat online. I have used a heating pad under an aluminum baking pan, with great success, too.

Leave the seeds in the berries until you are ready to sow them, then break open the berries and scrape out the seeds. Make sure the berries are completely dry.
