This is a lily that has been growing in my back yard for about five years now. It was a commercial bulb, but I have forgotten it name. Does any one recognize it?
Thanks
Help with Identification
Yes, Lilium henryi. It is a very variable species.
Yours is particularly beautiful.
This is one hardy lily! I have had this single bulb for at least five years. I started it out in the shrub border around my house. Then I moved it into a container. The purpose of that move was to make it portable so I could position it on a picnic table for photography with blue sky in the background when it was in bloom. You see the results. Since then, I have just left it in the container. Contrary to my expectation, it has thrived there. I think that is remarkable. It is so remarkable that I have changed my mind. I was considering trying to find a new home for this bulb. But now that I think about it, I believe I will buy a few more examples and put them all in a bed dedicated to orange lilies that last and last in the hot south.
Cibarius
Lilium henryi is heavily used in breeding for exactly that - its "iron constitution". The only drawback is the weak stems that most selections exhibit. If you get others, don't be surprised if they look a little different. As I mentioned, it is a very variable species. There is even a yellow form.
jmorth,
How did you arrange the lighting for your photo? It worked out very well.
jmorth takes a lot of night shots.
Cibarius, Moby's right, I do take a lot of night shots. To me, night shots lend a lot of definition to photos.
Another advantage is it eliminates some troublesome distractions (ie- neighbor's crappy garages).
One thing about Henryi, it is a durable lily (as you attest); photo is same lily, from this past summer...3 years after that first pic's date.
Night shots are very striking and easier than having to photoshop out power lines and other things of the sort.
So striking, that while I was looking at jmorth's photo, my DH (from a distance) said "WHAT is THAT?? It looks like a pumpkin throwing up!" ;)
LOL
That would be an interesting cultivar name: Lilium 'Pumpkin Vomiting'
Well, maybe it sounds better in another language: Lilium 'Buče Bruha'
Kinda like the Chevy Nova. In Spanish, No va means: it doesn't go.
another LOL...though I do drive a chevy Camaro.
I think "Pukin' Punkin" is rather catchy....
And Pukin' Punkin has that regional flare, too.
