The last two years I have had bad luck with my tomatoes, they die. I think I may have linked it to using different soil amendments that my nursery suggested. Last year I used a product called Bumper Crop. My tomatoes grew to a point, then died as soon and the weather got hot. This has NEVER happened to me. I have been reading that it is peat moss based, with bat guano, manures, worm castings, etc. Prior to that I have always used chicken manure, cottonseed meal, tilled it in about two months before planting and my garden did fine. Our yard has a lot of oak leaves and the soil tends to be acidic. I garden in raised beds, filled with a dirt that we got from a landscaping/hardscaping place. they told us the soil be be fine for a year and to be sure to add amendments the next year. What have you all found works good for your No. CA veggie gardens?
Soil Amendment information, Please?

I also have raised beds. In Las Vegas we have to plant our tomatoes by end of March to assure that the roots are driven downward before the heat hits. I also mulch with a commercial compost end of April. I do add my own compost to the beds at the end of the season. I also spot compost in the raised beds wherever I have an open space.
