My Harry Lauder has white on the old parts of the trunk. Is this a mold or lichen? Is this harmful to the tree?
What''s Wrong With Harry?
It looks more like a Morus (Mulberry) than Corylus to me. Check the main stem/trunk to see if there is any damage further down.
Probably one of the mulberries like Morus alba 'Chaparral', which is a weeper - or Morus bombycis 'Unryu', which is a contorted/twisted one.
Those are not Corylus leaves.
I can't tell from that one shot what is going on with the trunk. That could be a really bad case of scale.
I would scrape off a bit into a plastic bag, sealed well and take it down to your local county extension office and ask the agent to diagnose it.
