Am not starting these seeds until .....

Raleigh, NC

a few traders have sent seeds that I intend to start next ....February, January, March...depends.

should I refrigerate them now? Some are in little tiny ziplocked plastic pouches, some are in store paper envies inside of a ziplock bag.

don't know diddly about seeds except that they seldom germinate for me...

inside their ziplocked plastic, do I still need to keep them refrigerated where there are no veggies or fruits? that's nearly impossible here, to go for many months without fresh veggies to eat!

I don't refrigerate any of my seeds. I just put em in a baggie and forget about them! LOL I do winter sow them starting around the first of the year, which takes care of the need to refrigerate.

I wintersow most of my seeds, too. I also start a few inside under lights. Wintersown ones really are less challenging, with no worry about damp-off and no need to keep things sterile. But inside seems preferable for slower growing plants which need warmth do put on much growth.

I don't refrigerate seeds, either. I just keep them in a box.

I think my problem with the idea of wintersowing seeds, Karen, is that I'd think they were all weeds as they shot up. Until I've seen some foliage starting out, they all look the same to me! if the ground here is bare, it will have weeds next week....

Nope, bonjon, you don't have to worry about keeping them separate from fruit and veggies. By the way, are they all veggie seeds? Just curious.

bonjon: We wintersow seeds in containers, many (most?) of us prefer milk jugs. Then they're labeled as they're planted out.

Bonjon, you should visit the Winter Sowing forum for lots of ideas! When I winter sow, I label the outside of the container as well as putting a plant marker inside the jug so that when I open it up I know what's in there if I've lost the label on the outside.

oh, the only winter sowing I know of is putting seed in ground, not pot.

bonjon: We wintersowers tend to get overzealous about the method because we have such good results. But I don't want to hijack the thread so I'll drop the subject unless someone wants more information. Feel free to visit the forum here on Dave's or to dmail me.
