Pollinating Hibiscus "Wilfred's Way"

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

true i think they would bloom less.. If i had to wait all summer for just one flower. If it looked something like what i've seen on the tropical, I think it would be all worth it.. I would have them everywhere... I just dont have that much room to bring a tone of plants in and If i could have the beautiful flowers and leave them outside it would be fantastic..

There's the new hardy hibiscus named "Cranberry Crush" which is a bit different. It's close to brown in color and very different looking.

I think it would be a blessing for us gardeners that live in climates where we cannot grow tropical, that Wilfred get involved. With his knowledge, the sky is the limit.

Jon I don't think the people who have hardy wouldn't mind the fewer blooms on them, they probably be just like use when one decides to show itself off.

Jen they would not be for me but rather for those people that live in other climates that can't have the tropical ones. I just like to try new thing when it comes to plant propagation and anything that would please another person sounds great to me, I'm sure if I would get one that would be orange you'll surely would want one that's for sure, and I'll would be so pleased in giving you one. And anyone who would want one for that matter, sure would make them happy.

I thought you said you couldn't grow hardy ones Cause its to warm there.. Maybe i read wrong.. You could grow it indoors Like i have to do with tropicals.. We would love if you would try and with your knowledge I'm sure an orange if it possible you'll find a way...
amorecuore I have seen that one it is very different.. You are right its more brown.. But for me I still say its a shade of red.. I want a flower that is so different them what is out there lol I know wish full thinking... The funny thing is that in the tropicals I usually like the ones with pink in the flower...

Carolina, PR(Zone 11)

Not that I can't grow them here its just more difficult to do so and they only flower in winter just like tulips do here. and contrary to you I would have to put them in the fridge in the summer so they go dormant for a while like tulips what I'm going to try and get is a totally white hardy hib or the seeds for one to try and cross pollinate it with an GV that's orange or yellow since these are the ones that produce the most blooms and pollen.

Wilfred

This is one I would try with to cross pollinate it with a hardy.

oh yes the whole winter dormant thing i guess i over looked that... I have a bunch of different types of hardy's that i am trying to get growing from seeds.. However i dont have a white one.. But yes i have a yellow and it seeds like crazy... I hope someone can figure the process and fill us all in on how its done.. Do you think the mother should be the tropical or the hardy?? (the mother is the one with the seed pod right?) lol jen

Carolina, PR(Zone 11)

I would try it both ways since if it does accept the pollination it would have both the hardy and the tropical genes in them even though some would have more of one than the other but if plants come out of any of the seeds, I imagine that this one would be easier to accept to pollen of the tropical one since it would have its genes in it, check the history of marigold of what they originally looked like before to what we have today. Looks nothing to today's Marigold, probably something you wouldn't have in your garden. If I'm not wrong they mixed different types of plants before they got the marigold.

Yeah, it's available through Garden Crossings. I order more plants from Garden Crossings compared to any other site on the internet. I love their stuff.

I have a hardy white. I could actually send you a plant. I have attached a photo. It seeds like crazy but the seeds are very small. The plant is over 15 years old so I think it my be wild. I moved it when we built our new home 8 years go. Can plants be shipped to you or are their restrictions?

I've mailed and received some plants with no problem or restrictions, would gladly receive it to use it as one of the parent plant when crossing it with a trop. hib.

Wilfred, thank you for all of the advice... Here is a seed pod on my black dragon hibiscus.... I am hopeful that there are only a couple more weeks left before it ripens. =)
