Three images from different angles on this brightly coloured dragonfly photographed in Perth, Western Australia in May 2009.

This could be a male scarlet percher, Diplacodes haematodes (Odonata: Libellulidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/yg8l6lr
Again I agree your lovely red dragonfly is indeed Diplacodes haematodes. We had no entry in BugFiles, so I have created one here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/5756/
to which I hope you will add your images,
Ken
Thanks, suunto and Ken. Ken I will add the photos to the BugFiles.
Can either of you say why there is that hexagonal pattern on its eyes? Is it "apparent" because of the structure of the eye, or is there really some hexagonal pattern there? (Hope that question makes some sense).
The hexagonal pattern simply is a reflection of sunlight from the facets of its compound eye that happened to be pointing directly at the camera lens; it is not a structure on or within the eye itself.
Thanks, suunto.
