Southwest Illinois ??

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

Hi everyone. My son and his family just moved to southwest Illinois (Alma/Salem). I want to be able to help them with their outside landscaping, etc., but I don't know much about the area. I just know it's colder than my 7b area.

Where are you SW IL guys hanging out in here? We need you :)

what is it you want to know I can help you the best I can

What zone is it?
Will Rose of Sharon/Althea grow there?
Will crape myrtle grow there?
Will milk and wine lily over winter?
How about hostas?

Where they moved from is clay, and I see a lot of corn and milo and soybeans, so the earth must be fertile. How much amendment, and what, is used there?

Thanks so much, trinawitch.

yes all of those things will grow here...as for there soil, I don't know my yard is all clay..LOL

It is zone 5.
The soil is different everywhere. There is a lot of clay, but some places have really good black dirt. He would be best off to take a sample and have it checked to see if it needs anything added.

Yeah that way he knows if he's (or you) are picking up a plant that prefers more acidic or more alkaline soils you can adjust accordingly.

Thanks, guys. 5 is a lot colder than 7, so I appreciate your input.

Do y'all have plant round-ups? Which one(s) do you go to when you go?

I'm just interested to know what goes on in your neck of the woods. Thanks!

I am not aware of any plant round-ups in my area. But feel free to ask any questions

Thank you so much. If my son has any questions, I will let you know. I go home tomorrow.
