pomagranite from cuttings?

Galt, CA(Zone 8b)

Hello, I am new to this forum. I have a very large, old pomagranate tree that is getting ready to bite the dust. It is still putting out some green branches here and there. Has anyone had luck propogating this plant from cuttings? If so, should I use water, soil, rooting hormone......? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,

This is how it looked before it started dying last year.

In responding to your question. Yes, I've success with cuttings. I've planted a tree for my daughters in years past. Last early spring while visiting her, I decided to take a few branches from pruning/shaping her tree. I wrapped the branches in moist spagnum moss and kept them partially protected from direct heat/sun in the garden. Those 6-8" cuttings took roots after a matter of weeks -- I do believe. Now I've several 'baby trees' that I can transplant out the garden this year.

I'm not certain what is the life span of such trees. But is your tree affected by bugs or other ailments? I was just wondering -- out loud.

Thank you for the information Lily, I will try to get some cuttings now, and some next spring if any are left.

This tree is quite old. I know that it was planted about 36 years ago. There are no signs of insect, disease, or
fungus. I suspect that it was already a good size shrub before it was even planted here in the yard. Many of our
foundation planting and trees are quite old. I have no idea how long a pomagranate should live.
Thank you very much for the information, hopefully I will have some luck in growing cuttings.

I agree they are possible to do. deing in the deep south now is the time to do them. My reference material said softwood cuttings but I would try several kinds. Please let us know how it works out and what you used. I would also use a rooting hormone
I hope this helps
Dave
