I'm new at this, and was carefully sorting seed from chaff and saw small round black bugs running off the paper. What should I do? Also, I read about sterilizing seed in a mix of 1 Tablespoon cider vinegar to 1 quart of water and then drying the seed again. The context was vegetable seeds. Does anyone sterilize flower seeds--or is it generally not needed? I don't suppose sterilizing has any bearing on bugs at all, does it--Is it more about airborne stuff? Thanks
Little bugs in the zinnia seed: what to do?
I collect hundreds of different species of seeds. There are always bugs, insects inbetween, just because they like the plants. Usually it's no problem. Just dry the seeds in paper bags. Only if you discover a lot (more than 10) after drying for at least a week, you might have a problem.
"What should I do?"
smash those buggers..... LOL that is what I do and continue on with my cleaning of seeds.
Sorry I just had to say that....
now back to my corner...
Janet
Thanks to all of you! I hope you had a good holiday. Back to work tomorrow!
Eweed,
Did you paint all those people?
Gym no those were in a nursery in Ma. It is member Marias favorite nursery. When we visited her last oct we went there to visit. They had thousands of pumpkins there for sale. Not all were painted but a lot were. I asked the owner of the place how many pumpkins would be thrown out and she surprised me with zero. She said they would be shipping pumpkins until mid Dec. It seems she ships them to customers to make pumpkin pie with. What a smart operator to develop such a big market with such an easy thing to grow. But then I guess the people on the crowded East coast do have the dirt to grow them .
