I finally got my bee house for the Mason bees

Redding, CA

Here is a picture as to the location. It is on an east facing wall, under the eve of the house. It sits above a flower bed and in an area where there are azaleas, flowering pear trees and all sorts of other flowering things in the spring and summer. There is plenty of wet dirt for them to collect in the raised flower area the nest is located above. Me veggie garden (as the bee flies) is over the top of the house in back. For those of you with bee houses, does this look to you to be a good location?

DH the beekeeper, says that is a good location for your bee house. Being on the east will help them warm them up faster on these shorter days. Being under the eave will help shelter them.
Is that a slot at the top of the box? DH says the bees will enter and exit through the holes which lead to individual houses? I guess I don't know much about bee houses.
I do know that your bees won't have any problem finding your gardens. : - )
DH's bee hives look different. They have a slot at the bottom but no holes like yours. The bees enter the hive and exit through the slot at the bottom. They also take out their trash and dump it there. Yup, bees take out the trash.
The feral hive that is taking over the old brooder house, uses small holes in the concrete to get in between the walls. They are on a north east facing wall.

SW, mason bees are different from honey bees. They lay their eggs in the tunnels (holes), sealing each one as they go from the inside out. I've wanted one of those houses for a long time - it just isn't high on the project list for DH! I might have to resort to straws.

Very nice box, Tom! It should be fun to watch them hatch. Do you have them in your garden already, or are you going to purchase some and put them in your box?

I get it now, a different kind of bee. That explains a lot. Thanks KC.

They're great bees! Good pollinators and don't sting unless they are really harassed - and then only the female, 'cuz the male doesn't have a stinger.

Thanks KC. Good information as usual. I do hope your DH puts it on his to do list soon, or moves it up the honey do list! LOL!

KaperC, No I don't have any in the bee house yet, in fact, I don't believe I have ever seen any, but then I don't know what I am looking for. I have been told they are around here however...they are quite small and sort of a metallic green, and very heavy pollinators.

Tom, if you click on this link, you will see lots of pictures: http://images.google.com/images?q=orchard+bees
Everything I read says they are dark blue. I have had metallic green bees here, but those are different bees.

Here's a photo of my green bee.
