Hello :)
Based upon pics in 2 other Sparrow ID threads, it looks like the one on the left is a Chipping Sparrow? I thought their Sparrows were Clay Colored too.
Hmmmmmm...
I started to question it and decided to have it ID'd since this whole time I thought it was a Clay Colored Sparrow!
I'm definately confused now since I was looking at so many pics to decided which one it was...Big Sigh.
And what kind of Sparrow is on the right?
TIA :)
Susan
CLOSED: 2 different Sparrows in this pic...
The on on the right is a Chipping Sparrow and the left one may be a Juvenile Chipping Sparrow, not positive though.
Edited for mixing up left and right bird.

Burd,
Look at this pic of a Clay Colored Sparrow and compare it to the Sparrow on the left in my pic...

I agree with the one on the right being a Chipping Sparrow.
I think the one on the left might be female House Sparrow, but not 100% sure.

Sorry after taking a 2nd look at your pic, you may have it right. With a Chipping Sparrow (juvenile on right) the dark line going across the eye continues to the bill, with a Clay-c S it stops at the eye. My field guide says the 2 can get mixed up, and SusanLouise you are in the the range map for Clay-colored Sparrow's.
Hello Burd,
That pic helps out a lot...Thanks
Here's a pic of a Chipping Sparrow I took this summer in Custer County, Ne.
For me, it's when these 2 Sparrows put on their fall/winter plumage that I really start getting confused IDing them...almost as bad as distinguishing Sharp-Shinned and Cooper's Hawks...especially when they are immature...makes my head hurt...LOL
Thanks for helping me! (both of you) :)
