Dark brown FURRY caterpillar NO STRIPES???
You really should submit a photo if at all possible. One suspect would be a caterpillar of the Virginian tiger moth, Spilosoma virginica - see http://tinyurl.com/yhr7pqh for some images of this highly variable caterpillar.
Suunto I need a new dig camera..dropped mine. this is a furry dark brown very soft roly poly looking one that is a fast mover.
the hairs look uniform in length like he is wearing a fur coat
Except for being uniform in color, does it resemble the familiar 'woolly bear'? Yours does sound like it could be in the family Arctiidae.
Thanks,,I took a look at the wooly bear and it does look similar, but more lush fur and boy is it a fast mover. Dark brown almost black fur. Should I consider it friend or foe to plants in my garden. Does it turn into a moth or butterfly? I went on a few websites to id it with no success.
It does not sound like a serious pest species; from your description, it most likely will become a moth. Here's another arctiid for you to look at - http://tinyurl.com/yzffpex
thanks very interesting, but I have not seen the little devil yet! :-)
