WHat is in this Cocoon?
This is a bagworm, Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/yzmdcz4 for an image and more information. The larva stays in the bag while feeding, as does the adult female moth, which is wingless and grub-like in appearance. The male moths are winged, and leave their bag in search of a mate.
They are pest insects, and can rapidly defoliate shrubs or trees if they are in large enough numbers. You need to pick it off and check carefully for others (where there is one, there are more), then smoosh them, and throw them in the trash. Be sure to smoosh it first, or it will crawl out of the trash can.
