Photo taken in Kingman Arizona. Our thought was brown recluse. The photo looks much like the one found at this link. http://images.whatsthatbug.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/recluse_clay.jpg
Thanks!
What kind of Spider is this
The photo from your link is not a brown recluse but it does appear to be the same spider that you photographed. It looks like your spider is a male southern house spider, family Filistatidae, possibly Kukulcania arizonica since you are in Arizona. See http://tinyurl.com/yzn637u and http://tinyurl.com/yf8pwu9 for a some info and images.
Thanks for the reply. It certainly does look like the spider in your link. The second link made reference to the Southern House spider being larger than the recluse but that's the only indication of size I got. The one we photographed was roughly the size of my hand, legs included. Sound about right? Imagine our surpise when we woke up, opened our eyes (without glasses), and saw that thing perched above our bed!
My wife was obviously relieved to read your response.
Thanks!
Sure, if the spider you saw was the size of your hand, it is very unlikely that is was a recluse spider. Adult recluse spiders will usually have a leg span about the size of a quarter. Here's a little fact sheet from Ohio State University, http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2061.html
