This appears to be one of the so-called false katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae; subfamily Phaneropterinae) in the genus Scudderia - see http://tinyurl.com/yg7nx54 for an example. Note the dark structures near the top of its front tibiae; these are its 'ears.'

Thanks. One of us was arguing it was a katydid and one said grasshopper (not me).
