Radishes for 2010! Anyone growing them?

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Big, slice it and put it in a bowl and put some creamy ranch dressing on it! YUM!!!!

A salad by itself!

Moss Point, MS(Zone 8b)

I just tagged your recommendations for future ref. Awhile back there was a thread about being tired of summer vegs. Sounds like there are varieties out there that will allow mixing up the gardening seasons. If I can get radishes and lettuce to go with my maters and cukes, I'll be very happy.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Twiggy, dont forget the carrots!

Moss Point, MS(Zone 8b)

Blossom carrots will have to wait until I grow up. I have never been able to grow a decent carrot in my life and that's with trying numerous times. I just gave away the last of my carrot seeds and swore "never again". All I've ever been able to produce are ugly little deformities. I'm a glutton for punishment and may have another go sometime.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL! Me too.. (I had to through that at you for grins!.. dang things are forever pathetic! Sadly, its store boughts for me! Or the farmers market with someone else who has better luck... Now as far as root crops go for me, its taters, radish, beets.

Maters I have no problem with and beans. Peas I am fair with. Squash, melons and pumkins.. hit or miss.

And this last year discovered the secret to growing peppers here...I put those in containers. Infact I have 8 huge sweet green bells in the house under lights! And they have peppers on them! Dang near lost them to the first frost, but saved their wonderful hides and am enjoying them very much!

Well that's some comfort. I thought all you Yanks had carrots figured out. It's always easy to blame my failures on climate. Those Diacon radishes we discussed above look suspiciously like carrots in form. I've got to try them and if they work, surely there's a carrot that will. Maybe Michael and Farmer Dill can offer us some wisdom.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

My failures lie mainly in water...either waaay too much of it and the gardens too wet too long or not enough and poor soil.

Carrots, I only recall one successful crop in half a century!! I planted them thick in manure and we had moderate weather that year. Swore I would never do them again because of the obscene deformities! They were big ok, but weird shapes of every kind! How anyone gets those nice perfect nubbins, I swear they pour their seed into a mold! LOL!

Now the beets that year, oh my! Those were perfect, large and nice and round.

In ten years in one spot, the garden has never been the same 2 years in a row.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I can't do carrots or beets. Gave up. I'll buy them from my buddies at market.

Rattail radishes are good.

I grow carrots, I just harvested the last ones from a spring planting. I have more coming on from a September planting.
Here is how I do carrots:
1. Work the soil, carrots need deep, loose neutral to acid soil. I work in compost too. My compost contains little or no manure, is slightly acidic to counteract my neutral to alkaline soil and really loosens up the soil.

2. Pick a variety that says "short" and also "Sweet", the sweet part is very important. Chantanay and nantes are the sweetest.

3. I plant deeper than recommended, probably 1/2 to 1 inch deep so the seeds don't dry out before they germinate.

4. Keep the soil moist until they germinate, and don't let the little seedlings dry out.

5. Too much nitrogen and/or manure will cause forked, hairy roots and make the carrots taste like kerosene, alternating dry/wet causes the roots to split. Carrots require a lot of water, so don't skimp on watering them. I give my carrots a tiny bit of Espoma bio-tone after they get a couple of leaves, but nothing else.

6. If wire worms are a problem, sprinkle wood ashes before planting.

Ooooo, thanks Calalily. You always have such good info!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

I second that!! Dont know though if I am game to try them again though!

I found out yesterday, --that the seed Burpee sells through Wal -mart seed racks is not all available to the public to buy from Burpee, --Burpee said I would have to wait till spring to buy the winter radish seed , I wanted , to see if Wal-mart carried it again, [in the spring when the planting time for them has passed] what a drag-- I think I will cross Burpee of my seed list-- rant--rant --Michael

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Here Michael, try this company. I've ordered from them, regular and unusual varieties, good prices, good seed count and ship fast.

Just putting in my 2 cents. I grow alot of my root crops in rubbermaid containers, with drainage holes. Carrots like a lower PH and beets like a higher PH so I don't plant them together. If I can grow carrots ANYBODY can, they always take much longer then I think they should.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

1lisac - did I read that right, you put carrots in a container? That I have to see.. do you have any photos?

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

They are just getting started because the weather has been warm and they germinate when they feel like it. I did it last year but didn't think to take pictures but I will this time. I have radishes and beets growing that way also. I guess I just think of it as a raised bed.
Lisa

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, thats neat. Do take pics! I want to try stuff like that next season. In trying to cram stuff in a little space and am looking for space saving ideas!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Anyone know if radishes would be tempting to wildlife? It's nearly impossible to grow things out here that some critters won't eat.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm sure the tops would be to rabbits everything I have is fenced, Except my containers.
Bloosom-I grow root crops in containers because the ground is so hard. I have some carrots in a small raised bed in my main garden but I wanted more carrots and this is the only way I could think to do it.

Has anyone grown both China Roes and Burpee Salad Rose, --

Deer like Radish tops,

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I've grown carrots in containers. I used the big black pots, probably 15 gallon size.
I thought I had a photo of them, but I can't find it.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Salad Rose/Salad giant is more like a Red Icicle. Can be grown in the spring as well as the fall. Moderately hot. Get fairly large when fall grown. China Rose is better as a winter radish . Moderately hot. There are a number of cultivars I like better.

BLOSSOMBUDDY, I have some Nantes in the GH now, this pic was taken a week ago they do like water, note the bottom water tray.
My Spinach had very poor germination, bad seed, (left in the GH over the summer), when will I ever learn.

Thanks for answering my critter question, folks. Next year I'll try the containers in the dog pen, where the critters don't venture...had good luck with tomatoes in there!

Frankfort, KY(Zone 6a)

Got one tomato, a cutting from the garden.
DW comes out and looks at them every couple of days.
We kind'a got off the Radish question ?

I've got one too but mine only has one cluster of blooms that don't seem to want to open.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Yes, radishes--thanks for the info on other varieties, as I love anything hot and spicy!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Rentman, Waaaay Cool! Gonna have to try some in containers. Part of my veggie garden for next year is getting the most out of little space and containers. Thanks!

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

I planted Salad Rose, and China Rose, -- I and I am glad I marked the plantings, I can see no diference between the two, --they look identicle, --so I am ordering more China rose [as burpee will not sell me any Salad Rose] from Kitazawa, to see if it is the same as what I grew from another supplier, --I think either I got China Rose from the Burpee pack, or the other way around, --but both were ready at the same time and they are exactly the same, -- but they both look like nice icicle radishes I will try to upload a picture containing a picture on one --

Michaelp, they all look good to me. I'd probably eat the ones at the bottom of the photo (don't know how you managed to get them into the house for photo!0) right out in the garden. The ones at the top would go into a salad or with my Friday beer. I only have a beer on Friday after I get home from work, I'm really not much of a drinker but I enjoy my Friday ritual. Must have something to nosh on with the beer, though. For some reason I think radishes taste good with beer. So here I am wishing my radishes would start to bulb up for my Friday ritual!

Blossom this is from Pinetree Seeds and their description of Hailstone (which they mis-spelled) sounds like your long lost radish. White, round, 1".

I just got their catalog out of the mailbox and I feel an order coming on. The catalog is wonderful and so are the prices. They've got several ethnic categories too. I had forgotten how nice it was to actually look at a catalog and theirs is very nice. It has been many years since I ordered from them but I remember they gave good service.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Wow, beer and radishes! Sounds even healthier than beer and pretzels!

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, you need a little salt to go on those radishes. Sea salt is still healthy, right? Beer is now supposed to be good for you. I just saw that on the Learning Channel. Or maybe it was PBS? I wonder if beer improves you memory?????

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Omg, if so, I'd better learn to like it, lol. Never tried salt on radishes; sounds yummy!

Frankfort, KY(Zone 6a)

Oh Yes salt on radishes....my DW goes nuts when I put salt on Watermelon....Try it.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Ive sworn off beer for life..that stuff can kill ya... not gonna happen here. No no no! pit-u-wee! E-yuk!

Twiggybuds....thank you will look into those!

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

I think Radishes, esp hot ones go well with beer, --but I like any of the nice crunchy tender ones, --I think it is a texture thing as much as a taste thing -- also the green radish seed pods make a great snack , with almost anything, -including Beer

Dayton, WA

One of the better radishes I grow both in the Spring and Fall is called "Long Scarlet", and just as the name implies, it's a long, deep red radish with a good bite to it! Purple Plum is another favorite, with a pungent radish taste without being too hot

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

I just got through planting another bunch of assorted Daikon, about an hour ago, --along with China Rose[ from Kitazawa], --to see if it is like the ones I mentioned earlier, -- I love Radishes, --esp Daikon types for cooking and pickling, --

(Daniel) Mount Orab, OH(Zone 6b)

I always grow radishes, just to whet my gardening appitate! I think next years favorite will be Watermelon or Easter Egg, if I can find the seeds here on DG!
