It is difinitely a fall Day here in Ohio, cloudy and only 54 at 1:30pm. I love cloudy rainy days. It sounds like a good soup day. I love the fall weather it is my favorite time of year.
My favorite thing about fall is that we get to spend a day with our best friends picking out pumpkins and carving them. We usually make an all day event of it. Our friend Amy makes a big pot of chili or stew and her husband John makes some decadent dessert. After we go and find just the right pumpkins we go back to their house for dinner and carving.

Fall Has Arrived. What is you favorite fall activity?
As the days shorten and the temperature drop I find myself stacking in the firewood and kindling that will insure a nice warm place by the fire soon! I find myself smiling at the thought of that fire and knowing that about the time I empty the ashes for the first time this winter I will be sitting there cozily wishing it were Spring again already!
I will spend many hours pouring over plant catalouges and dreaming of the first daffodills!
I spend as much time as I can outside, sitting in the grass...smelling the scent of fallen maple leaves in the air. I go around and check on things...seeing if the perennials have new growth at the base, which will be next years plant (for the ones that do that).
I mow the yard about 243 times, to shred up the leaves!...LOL
Gee,... let's see....
watching football games, cuddling up with my DH, looking over all the new roses catalogues and picking out the ones I want for spring... and hoping to spend more time chatting and posting in the garden!

I love going for walks through fallen leaves and hearing them crackle under your feet. Warm sweaters fall foods like squaush, pot roast's, apple pie, leaving the bedroom window open a crack at night to smell the cool fresh air when your sleeping, and yes I even like the rain. It's the start of a cuddley time of year.
We love to go the cider mill and take our 4 year old grandaughter. Fresh sqeezed apple cider and hot cinnamon donuts.
It doesn't get any better.

cool temperatures at night; Indian summer days with bright blue afternoon skies.
watching the kids play in the leaves (and watching the dogs play with the kids in the leaves :)
having friends over for a weenie roast and s'mores, or a big pot of chili if the weather forecast changes.
turning my compost piles on a foggy morning when the smell of burning leaves hangs in the air....
pecan pie (and apple pie, and blackberry cobbler, and.....)
the first cup of hot cocoa. With marshmallows of course.
making Halloween costumes.
and even....putting the garden to bed.
I just adore the fall. We love to take the grandchildren up into Oklahoma to the Talimena Scenic Byway and see all the foilage changing colors, staying at the cabins, roasting weiners and marsh-
mallows. Love the rustle of the leaves and the wind on our faces.

Harvest dinner at the Church, Going to the cider mill and getting the apples pressed into cider for our annual sale, one last round of golf at Chenango Valley State Park while the leaves are at the peak of their glory then battening down the place for our migration to where NO SNOW WILL FLY.
Fall has always energized me - I go for long walks in the woods, gathering beautiful leaves and seed pods, evergreen cones, wild rose hips. We wander around back roads and watch the season progress, and stop at the apple farm for bushels of pippins and later, spies for sauce and pies. I also spend a lot of time moving plants around just so next spring I'll have some surprises, I guess. All the things I didn't get done this year, go onto next year's list - I'll still be catching up a couple of years after I've died, years and years from now!
I love everything about fall except my garden fading away. My favorite thing to do in the fall is go up to Connecticut and see family. We like to go to the "Big E" when we are up there too. The Big E is kinda like all of New Englands state fair..huge. They have a state house for each state and it's kinda of like a mini-museum and what it is famous for inside each house. For example, in the Vermont house you can get anything made with Maple such as maple cotton candy (hhmmm hhhhmm good). Unfortunately my husband couldn't get leave to go this year :o(
We have lots of favorite activities, such as cooking, baking, long walks, campfires, opening the windows, snuggling under the comforter, collecting firewood, curling up on the sofa with a cup of cocoa and my favorite 'woobie' (blanket) watching an old movie. I LOVE autumn!
Well, I love our yearly tradition with our best friends, which Howard mentioned at the beginning of this thread.
I also get a kick out of how social the birds suddenly are with one another now that there's a chill in the air, breeding season's over and their bellies are growling. Whereas chickadees, titmice, cardinals, goldfinches, housefinches and sparrows came sparingly during the summer - and many only one at a time - now our feeders are bustling with activity. Great fun!
I love the cool air. In summer, there's only so much you can strip until the authorities come and get ya. In the fall and winter, I can bundle to my heart's content. We keep our house quite cool, around 65* in winter, and right now we have our windows wide open. We close up and turn on the heat when company comes, though - we're not totally weird. ;-)
It's amazing how friendly our old curmudgeonly Siamese Elliott gets when it gets cool. Body heat has an irresitable allure to a kitty with chilly ears.
I love how our dog matches the fall leaves

and what a wonderful footwarmer she makes

I love the sweet smell of freshly cut hay and love seeing the bales piled high on haywagons.

Ooooh, and I love having that first fire of the year in the fireplace. With two cats and one dog, each of us is guaranteed something warm and furry on the lap, too.
CANDY CORN - I FORGOT TO MENTION CANDY CORN!!!!!!!!
Oooh, my kids love it when I buy a big tub of candy corn and a can of spanish peanuts. Mix 'em together and put them in a candy jar...great munchy food. (Well, my dentist my disagree with calling it "great", but it tastes great!)
I like watching the kids play in the fallen leaves...and the smell in the air. How good it feels to come inside in the warmth.
Oooh, this thread is giving me the warm fuzzies! Fall is my favorite time of year - warm sweaters, football games, tailgating, soup simmering all day long, pumpkins, canning, freezing, baking, green tomatoes, fallen leaves, stocking up for cozy fires, chrysanthemums, hayrides, cornstalks, curling up with my dogs, fall foliage, ...
Just knowing winter is around the corner has me outdoors as much as possible.
I love long hikes in the mountains this time of year. They elk are bugleing and showing their might. Squirrels and chipmunks are buisy storing up for winter. Bears are out more than ever getting those last berries. Coyote pups have pretty much got the knack of hunting down but still take time out to play. The doe deer are trying their hardest to teach their fawns to be on alert while the frolicking fawns could care less. But my favorite things about fall is the crisp mornings, warm days, cool nights, and baking, baking, baking.

I wore a sweater for the first time this season. It was soooo comfy! :-)
Fall? Seasons?? Marjory Kinnan Rawlings, author of Cross Creek said...
"Here in Florida the seasons move in and out like nuns in soft clothing, making no rustle in their passing"
I look forward to making soups and stews and casserole recipes that get put away for most of the year. It's a time to snuggle and get close with my favorite foot warmer! And Thanksgiving! My favorite family get together.

Heidi- Can I come to Montana? You mentioned my most favorite animals to watch. I'm jealous!! :) "T"
Come on up Sledder! It's a beautiful time of year to visit.
Heidi
I've always felt that autumn is when God gives us a last blast of amazing color to get us through the winter. This part of NC probably gets more tourists in the fall of the year than any other because of the Blue Ridge Parkway. To drive up there and look out over the mountains and see all the color and the electric blue sky you know that God is definitely in the details. I always love walking the dogs as the leaves fall and hearing the crunch and the fragrance that only autumn leaves have. I'm always excited to do my dividing of plants at this time of year too. vic
Heidi: If I leave now, I should be there by Friday or Sat. **giggle** :)
wow... you guys are so lucky to live where you do.. it all sounds so wonderful living on the farms and things..
we are just coming out of our winter.. the daffodils and jonquils are finishing and the days are becoming warmer...
its like everything is waking up from a long sleep.... the skys are blue and work hard to push the dark clous away in the morning. I live walking distance from the beach and soon we will get the sea breezes... its a wonderful smell...
so, bar.b.que's..... salads.....summer fruits and berries for us and lazy days at the beach!
Laura
