Question On Perennial Morning Glory "Blue Dawn"

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

I have a Blue Dawn Morning Glory that I grew from a cutting last fall. It bloomed all winter down here in Ft Lauderdale (Zone 10) and then stopped blooming around May 2009. The plant still looks great, but still is not flowering at this time. Is this normal and will it begin to bloom again this winter? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

mine didnt start blooming until a few month ago and is going strong. mine dies down in winter and has to re grow.

maybe since you are in a warmer climate it is taking a break and acting like an ever green. i dont like giving this one any type of fertilizer as it doesnt need any help but you could try bloom boost.

or it also could be your bloom season is done for it and may pick up in a month or two.

Thanks for your input. I'm hoping it will start blooming again when the weather cools off. I also grow "Heavenly Blue" from seed each fall and that blooms all winter and then dies when the sun gets real intense in early to mid May.

Hi Jon!

Welcome! Here is information about Ipomoea indica (Blue Dawn):

I live near Vero Beach, FL just north of you. Mine blooms constantly and has been since I received it in June. It grows quickly even in the 5 gallon container that I have it in! I do use Bloom Booster by MiracleGro on it about once a month and I believe that is what motivates it to flower. But I have heard others say you shouldn't have to fertilize it. Is yours receiving full sun? I believe they bloom more in all day full sun.

I would love to see a photo of yours when it does bloom! There are so many different cultivars of I. indica. A variety range of blue colors. :-)

Hi Becky

I know where Vero Beach is. You're just up the east coast a bit. One day I drove up there just to go to the beach for the day. My "Blue Dawn" is out in the front yard and gets full day sun. I checked back through my notes and it bloomed from July 2008 (when I acquired it) nonstop through May 2009. I used to give it Miracle Gro on occasions but haven't done so in a long time. I just may try a bloom booster to see if that helps. I took a few cuttings off of it and will try to root those. I'm hoping it will begin blooming again. I've even thought about cutting it way back to see if that stimulates a new bloom cycle.

it should root easily by cuttings but you can also put a runner to the ground and it will root readily also. mine is all over the place and i pull the runners up and have tons of rooted ones.

That's an excellent idea imzadi. I have to pull up the runners every couple of weeks so that it doesn't take over some of my hybrid hibiscus. Here's what the non-blooming "Blue Dawn" looks like today.
