I recently recieved a plant from a friend of mine & while planting it, happened to see a bug on one of the leaves that looked like a lady bug, but---it looked like it was made of solid gold. Does anyone know what this beutiful little bug is? Is it harmful or beneficial to my gardens?
Wish I had gotten a picture, will if I see it again.
LADY BUG????
Sounds like a tortoise beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae; subfamily Cassidinae - see http://tinyurl.com/yfus8pt for a couple of examples.
No, that's not it. But thanks!
The one I saw is solid gold with no other markings.
But is the shape of yours similar? There are a great many species of tortoise beetles; what I gave you was meant as an example of that group and was not an attempt to provide an exact match.

Yes, same shape.
Now that I know this, will check it out on the net to see if I can find an exact match.
Thank You!
