Seen on a farm. Probably very common.
CLOSED: Grasshopper in MA
This appears to be a female differential grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis - see http://tinyurl.com/yg8af4z for images. You are correct; this is a very common and widespread species.
Wikipedia says this species isn't supposed to be in the east. I guess that shows what they know. Thanx suunto.
Although the current range map for this species (see http://tinyurl.com/yff9udl) does not show it in Massachusetts, it has indeed been collected there before - see http://tinyurl.com/yz27m9d - populations of this grasshopper in the eastermost portions of its range tend to be very scattered rather than contiguous.
