CLOSED: Scary looking wasp insect in the Pyrenees

Sheffield, United Kingdom

We were recently on holiday in the Pyrenees and found a couple of wasp type bugs (don't think they have wings though so I guess they're not wasps). They appear to have massive stings and are quite large, maybe 4 or 5cm long and fairly chunky. They were crawling around the ground.

Heres another picture of it.

Thanks

This is a harmless cousin to grasshoppers and crickets (order Orthoptera). It is in the family Tettigoniidae, perhaps an Ephippiger sp.; see http://tinyurl.com/yfcsf8y for an example. The 'stinger' is simply its egg-laying organ, called an ovipositor.

Thanks, searched the internet for hours and couldn't find anything like it!
