OMG, they were RIGHT THERE in front of me...i've been wanting to see how close i could get to them. a few minutes ago i actually got close enough to the feeder to put my hand on it.
there is this really aggressive one that i think is protecting "his" stash of food. anyway with my hand on the pole, maybe 6-8 inches from me, he flew to the morning glory tree that the feeder is in. he just kinda looked at me with these teeny brown eyes, fluttered a little and then DRANK from the hanger..
he was okay with me until the other 3 decided to play tag with him.
i'm off to kmart to buy 2 more feeders so that they others can drink also. the little guy must be expended alot of energy trying to protect his territory.
gosh they are funny!!!!!
i wish i had a digital so i could stand there and take a picture of him so close up : (

MSJen,remember if you hand another feeder, but it a distance from the one you already have up. Have learned from experience that if you put 2 feeders too close together, the same aggresive bird will hog all the feeders if he/she can. I have one feeder in the back yard, one in the front, and another to the other end of the house, that way not just one hummer can guard all the feeders and chase all the hummers away.
We have spotted impatiens (jewelweed) on the creek bank. Hubby said he counted 7 hummers Sat. at once - I went out 3 separate times - never saw one on them. I even had on a red shirt, what gives? Brenda
Twice in my life I have held a hummingbird in my hand. Here's what happened. The first one flew into a window and I went out and picked it up. Dead? I hoped not, put it in a little box with dryer lint for padding, made some sugar water, got some into a straw, inserted the beak and soon I saw the tongue come out, then again, then faster. Soon the head came up, eyes popped open and all of a sudden he took off and flew around the room until I opened the door and out he went into a bush. He roosted on a low limb until late the next morning and we were all able to go out and take a close look at him. After that we always had one friendly hummer who could come to the window and look in at us. The second time was last year when the spiders had built big webs and one little hummer got caught. We saw it struggling so I went out and took it carefully in my hand (like holding a cotton ball) peeled the spider web off it and turned it loose. While it struggled to free itself it was making funny sounds and 3 other hummers came to help.
I think our hummers are gone for the season. :-(
don't feel bad, my hummers have been gone for about 2 weeks already :o(
Hey Bossy,
They must have flew south to Alabama for they are all over and we have a bossy one too! It makes you want to spank him/her it is so mean to the others!
Oh well, it's a nature thing I guess!
Cheers!
we still have hummers in NE Texas
Awh, what a neat stories, just a momet I held life in my hand...ever stop to think what joy that is to behold.
Last week I found a wonderful website about hummingbirds, but dont remember what the url was - I am using my son's computer while he works on mine - and he erases all the temporary files every day. he doesnt want me to bookmark things because I tend to bookmark EVERYTHING that I find interesting. I thought it would be easy to find again, but I have been doing searches for about an hour and cant find the right site. does anyone have links to hummingbird pages they like?
Grandma-Bill,
Try www.hummingbird.org It is the official site for the hummingbird society that is headquartered here in the great first state of Delaware!! Happy surfing!
