Begonias - A tale of Addiction

Thanks for that link you enabler,,, LOL
Elaine
Oh boy! You guys made me be aware of Baker's garden in Ohio, a mere 7.5 hr drive from St. Louis rather than the 3 day drive I was planning to do for the ABS convention in SF in august... Watch out, here I come.
LOL, Now that they are all safely inside, the trick is going to be keeping them healthy all winter!
hcmcdole, That colossus would make anyone's begonia look puny. He had 7' tall cane begonias. I didn't know they could get that tall.
Butch, very nice. Where was that photo taken?
Thanks, Butch. I was going to say that it looked like one of the Temples I visited along the Yangtze River. One that is being flooded by the dam.
Loved your threads Stormy-- I have the fever too--(counting over 100+ diff. varieties) maybe we can work up a swap next spring. ^_^

Wow, That one is exceptional. I found the bonzai gardens to be particularly beautiful, especially the one in Nanking.
Tommie, Thank you, yes we can. You'll just have to help me with how to wrap them for shipping.
Why don't online stores have after Thanksgiving sales for begonias?
What is the name of this begonia? It reminds me of Othello or Little Night Music.
The bloom in the picture looks out of place. If all begonias bloomed like this, then there is no telling how many new begoniacs there would be.
that kinda looks like a bouganvillia coming over the top.
Gran, yes it is a Bouganvillia bloom hanging from a neighboring plant.
Butch, LOL you are probably right!! I have no idea what it is. Most of the large plants at this place are unlabeled.
I have never seen a Begonia sale.
logee's is having a cyber monday sale today only .Everything is 20% off...
Thanks!
It is a cane/shrub. It is B. brevirimosa (possibly subsp. exotica). You will see pictures that have them both as separate species but they look so much alike that Mark Tebbitt classifies them as the same (hence the subspecies?)
I think it comes from New Guinea or Malaysia. This is one cane/shrub you can actually start a new plant from a piece of leaf cutting. Bill Claybaugh had several started from leaf when Houston had the convention last year. (Yeah, I bought another one and lost it so now I have another one that I got in FL).
Here is one at the Huntington (or was it Descano?) from the LA convention.
It looks really pretty in that setting. Such a handsome plant. What is your groundcover?
I think it is Pellonia daveauana (common name = watermelon begonia but not really a begonia).
