I have a friend that is trying to convince her husband that an elevated vegetable garden is NOT a good idea. She thinks he'll believe it if he sees something online. Does anyone know of a website that shows some good "RAISED" bed (not elevated) designs. I design beds myself, but I don't have a website. Thanks for any ideas.
Randy
looking for a website
Randy, did you have a chance to look at the photos of the raised beds on the website I set after I went on the Monterey Bay Master Gardener's tour?
Don't forget straw bale gardening and usages in raised beds. There is a thread or two about raised planters somewhere here at DGH.
Those were great photos Ima took from her garden tour of several different people's raised beds. I plan on showing them to DH when he gets a spare minute and isn't asleep.
Don't know of a specific website just for raised beds. Sorry. : - (

Janet;
I remember seeing that, but I can't remember which thread it was on.
Randy, this is the link that Ima, posted: http://claypigeonenterprises.webs.com/index.htm
Hope that helps you!
BTW, the new kitten is named after Buddy Holly. I didn't get it until he attacked my glasses. LOL! : - )
Right now he is pretending to be a neck scarf, and purring sweetly. ES is studying for a big test, so I get to baby sit. LOL!

Thanks, Jules----I'm pottering in my studio this afternoon. I'm trying to make an oval planter......a bit of a challenge!
Thanks SW.
Randy
Turn about is fair play, and I can't say how many times you've helped me out, imapigeon. Glad I figured out where the thread was, so I could pass it along to DP. : - )
An oval planter, are we going to get to see photos?

Well, I put a slab base on it yesterday, and I haven't been able to work on it today. I should be able to take it out of the damp box tomorrow & refine the base. Whether it survives its two firings is another question altogether!
Assuming it cleans up OK, I'll probably take a picture before the first firing, so I have proof that I made it....just in case...LOL!
Just curious - what's wrong with an elevated veg bed?
Nothing inherently wrong with one Kathleen. They just take a lot more water and care. When it comes to watering, it's like the difference between a clay pot on your patio and a bed. You also don't get the natural earthworm activity you'd get in a regular "earth-bound" garden. And with a little rabbit wire on the bottom of a raised bed frame, you can keep the gophers out so the down side is relatively small.
I've found that newspaper mulch acts like a worm-magnet! I have plenty of them in my raised beds.
I see. Yes, when we need to replace our 'elevated' bed, I will either give up on veggies or do enclosed straw bales.
I hope to terrace my kitchen garden using strawbales set on top of the hardware cloth and back filled with dirt. Randy gave me some good ideas that I think will work out well. Just a matter of learning how to drive the tractor. ; - )
I used to raise worms to feed my baby water turtles. Yup, they like newspaper, although they like it better after it's been through the shredder. I'll have to amend the soil too. So I'm hoping to get an early start on it.
I want a veggie garden this year!
Were you able to check out those raised beds from ima's tour, Randy? Some nice ones. : - )
Ima, can't wait to see how it turns out. Hope that you don't develop any cracks in the planter. Patience is key, when working with the complexity of a project like yours. Keep us posted!

yeah SW. I looked back over them and sent the link to my friend Susan. Her DH is still not convinced. Yet he can't understand why his garden didn't produce anything this year. His elevated bed might work just fine if it were a little deeper. She said he used 2 X 8s for the sides. That's only 7 1/2 inches deep. Not much will grow with only that little room for the root system.
Too true, which is why I plant to stake out those bales (using rebar to hold them in place) after spreading that cloth you told me to try, then back fill with dirt to make my raised terrace beds. DH is using the tractor to give Hay rides so I have to wait for a slow day at the PP. Right now, aside from avoiding Buddy's claws my big deal is putting a temp. fence up to keep my dog in and fixing the gates so they stay shut.
I know I will need to ammend our soil, so I want to get started plotting it out. Gathering my materials, so I can get 'er done.
Have a good day, all!
Glad I could help, DP. Some people just don't get it til you show them.

SW, do you have a source for cheap hay/straw bales?
Kathleen;
Even hay prices have dropped below $10.00. There's that little feed store on Vista Way near Warmlands, I'm sure their oat straw is pretty cheap if you haul it yourself. It's much less than hay.
That place has the worst name - nobody can ever remember it! LOL I'll have to check there.
Round-Up, which is across the road from us, had some outside a few weeks ago for $9.50. Last year I bought some wet bales from them for that price.
Well DH usually takes his truck or has them deliver, and we usually get the oatstraw bales for (knowing I have a lousy memory for numbers) about $8.00 each. He usually tries to buy some extra because people want them for lawn decorations. But he sells them for about $10 each. He doesn't make much profit, but he makes a little on it. Probably enough to pay for some of the gas. Oh and we get them from Dan's Feed and Seed. We normally deal with their store in Perris, but they have one in Temecula too. I'll confirm the cost if I ever see DH again. People started coming in to buy pumpkins yesterday and we weren't even open yet! Pumpkin Prices went up this year. Mostly due to increase in what the farmers have to pay for water. So many didn't thrive so there are some shortages among the different varieties. You know some of the small pumpkins are more expensive than the regular Jack O' Lantern sized ones? Amazing.
Try to find a local feed store. It's better if they are weathered as long as they don't fall apart. One of the reasons I want to get started on the terracing soon!

Kathleen, it's call "Country Feed and Seed". Too simple..
Don't tease KC, DP, she doesn't have farm animals and it wouldn't necessarily come to mind. : - )
I do think that her slopes would do well with terraces made of straw bales for raised gardens. DP, can tell you how when he is done teasing you! ; - )
BTW, last time we drove by your place KC, I told my boys about the Great Toad Escape. LOL! They were laughing their heads off. Especially when they saw the fence. Great laugh. Thank John and yourself for sharing that story with us. : - )

I wasn't teasing her SW. I couldn't remember it either. I just happened to drive by it and read the sign.
If you say so! ; - )
Actually, that's how I found my new roofer. So I got no room to talk, especially since he is only a mile down the road, and had to repair a bad repair job that wasn't even completed by someone else. The kicker is, this guy is right across the street from my chiropractor. Duh!
Now I'm wary of contractors.
Even if you were teasing KC, we know there was only fun behind it.
