CLOSED: Bugs on milkweed pod

Lima, OH

Apparently they really like milkweed. I've never noticed them before. Just curious if anyone knows what they are and whether or not I should do anything about them.

Thanks!

These appear to be nymphs of the large milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus (Hemiptera/Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/y9z3nqx for an image. Unless you are raising milkweed for the seed pods, you do not need to do anything; they will not feed on or harm other plants.

Well, on the advice of a friend I was letting them mature for the butterflies. OTOH, it has been so cold so early that I doubt any butterflies will be around at this time.

Thanks for the ID!

Sharon
