Son-in-law, a very new and enthusiastic nature photographer sent this to me for ID. Not a clue what it is beyond beautifully ugly. Help !!
CLOSED: Caterpillar an hour from Alamagordo New Mexico...
I don't know which caterpillar this is, but kudos to your son-in-law for a great shot. His enthusiasm is paying off.
Identified by a professor from the University of New Mexico as the larval stage of a member of the Sphinx moth family.
Sorry we can't get it down to species.... Several sphynx cats turn red, but I'm not seeing the markings on the side that could distinguish it.
