Yes, did live on the ocean, but we are a few hours from the coast now. Not sure how this swap works, but been reading the back posts. Am very happy to hear you all as I am a plantaholic, have had this happy affliction for many years and no end in sight .. :-) Grow most of my garden from seed...direct sow.
Cottage Garden Seed Swap and Chat #41
Lisianthus?! Lea you have lisianthus seeds? I am equally excited for you! I only looked for the seeds one year (with no success), and was sure I read that they were sterile. I've never even looked after that first time. I think mine are still alive but they haven't bloomed in weeks. I'll bet there's nothing to even hunt for now.
Later will have some Dendranthema seed . They are blooming now.
sandnsea, there was a sign-up for the piggy swap earlier. If you want to join, starlight will have to tell if there's still room, because she's the one who is going to be receiving everyone's seeds and sending out the packages. We'll be posting what we're contributing beginning November 1st, and the oinking for seeds will start then.
This was the signup page with some info and links to more info:

La, look at the ones that have the dead flower petals over the top of them or better yet just feel and see if you feel a big seed pod in there they are quite big about an inch long mine were you might be surprised the pod turns brown they have to be viable I got some from Star and they germinated I'm pretty sure they were her seeds and not purchased, ohhh Star...I remember those seeds being a little bigger than what I have purchased in the past too. They may not come true cause the ones I got from Star were solid blue and she thought they were going to be the blue ones with the white trim :)
Oh and if you have a pod with the dead petals over it take the petals off they get moldy can't be good for the pod I just found two more pods on mine on the porch :)) Now if they just get ripe!
The plantfiles say a lot of seeds are sterile but they turn out to be viable, have you noticed that? I don't go by the plantfiles on that part anymore. I have some rex begonia seeds that I'm going to try for this year and if it works out I'm sending some into the swap just to see if just some are viable cause I couldn't plant all of them but I haven't opened any up yet to see if there are seeds in them. I did see a picture on here somewhere that a lady had a bunch of rex begonias in little pots and they didn't look like cuttings they looked like they were from seeds I've never seen any seeds to those sold anywhere have you? These may be like Star said just some are viable.
You cna buy rex begonia seeds . begonia s require patienc e to germinate and grow. In th egh's we start growing them around Thanksgiving to have ready for April they slow to germinate and onc e they do , they sit and sit, and sit and did I say they sit. for weeks and weeks before they wil decid e to get their act togethe r and grow, but onc e they do ya got a beautiful plant.
Ya the Lisianthus ya got wa s from plants not commercial, but guess they may nto totally cme true if ya got all blue and no white rim with them.
Thanks Star :) The annual begonias that I usually grow take forever too but these Rex will take longer planting them around Thanksgiving would really make it a long time lol Not sure if I want to try that one or not have you ever grown them. I'm always worried about the other getting damp off they are so slow to grow I wonder if I could put the seed tray on top of the cable box and just leave them there until I start my Lisianthus so I don't have to have a light going that early what do you think? I'd love to start some but that long to germinate makes me stand back and think about it lol
Star would you like to try some I can go ahead and send them to you after I look to see if there are seeds in there lol No I'll go look now I've been afraid to look lol I think I do have seeds not as many as the pink begonia that I grow in one pod but to look at them there are a lot, they look like they are red in color, just dust of course :) I'll send you some if you want to try them.
Is this where we enter the Piggy Swap?
The sign up thread is here:

It's marked closed, but I think there were a couple more slots left. And one participant is considering dropping. I mentioned your name there as wanting to join.
I've been reconsidering saving seeds from my Tithonias (Mexican Sunflower). These 2nd generation plants are over 9' tall, and didn't start blooming till September. Their parents, from purchased seed, started blooming in July at 3' tall and maxed out at 5' or so. Perhaps some of you with a longer growing season would like some, I'd be happy to gather some if anyone would like. I dried some heads and was starting to clean them when I realized I don't really want them. Of course, after tossing them in the compost I realized someone else might, LOL.
Gemini... Dig soem of them back out of the compost. They great for the hummers and butterflies. I had such a mes with mine this spring. Think it that they needed to eb plante d i a bigger contaienr to begin with and they had streche d to much by the tiem I had discovere d they had sproute d in baggy.
I just noticed that the first day of the swap is on a Sunday. Hmmm. Now I need to decide if I will stay home from church to sit at the comuter! ; )
Tonya
Well, the butterflies and hummers were what made me save seeds from the Tithonia originally. They still got a lot of attention from them this year, but so late and so high up in the air, LOL. They're like small trees! I'll snag some more though, just looked in my little seed cleaning-compost bag, thinking they'd be right on top. Stuck my hand in there to move stuff around and Ouch! One of those prickly seed heads from the Lion's Tail got me, so I'll just let those be.
Did someone ask about Rue seeds? I noticed nice ripe pods on mine just a while ago, and gathered several. Pretty foliage, and unusual clusters of yellow blooms.

Those are going to be pretty.
Very pretty beds kl. You'll have to be sure and post some pics with the plants in them, too.
Glad to hear the posting of seeds will start in the afternoon on the first. I may plan on taking the day off on Monday, too! (ok, I was already planning on it for other reasons... )
Neal, I am harvesting some of the purple hyacinth beans right now. Any suggestions on the best way? I have left some on the vine and the pods shriveled up a lot more than the ones I received last year so, wondering when is the best time to havest them. I figured since you have had them, you may have been a "bean picker".
Tonya
klstuart, I'm lovin those beds! I want some rock like that!
I just finished planting my coneflowers and some mountian bluet (the white ones) the blue ones will come later just had those on hand. I transplanted a moon flower I just hope it makes it he looked a little stressed in the 3 gal. pot but they are pretty tough I think. I finally got my side yard cut and raked had to it's suppose to rain for about four days starting tonite!
Man I jumped on here soon as I got in the house and have dirt all over my touch pad I wonder how much dirt is under my keys LOL
I'm going to just let the leaves fall all over the front side yard this year then I'll have the whole side to plant new babies in next year if I have my house then :) Everything is IF right now I hate it! Oh well as dad used to say 'What will be will be no use worrying about it'. I get all of the neighbor's leaves so I shouldn't have any problem killing the grass lol
Those are foxgloves :)
are they easy to germinate? i think i had some seeds before and got ZIP.
Foxgloves are very easy to germinate, in fact they self-seed by the hundreds. Probably best to just scatter on the ground in the fall, if possible, but last year I started 4 different species indoors, from seed I bought in late fall or winter probably, and they germinated well. They may need to be sown on the surface - I don't remember.
Kelly, that new terraced bed is AWESOME!
Tonya, I remember Hyacinth bean pods needed to start shriveling before the beans were ripe. You can tell when they're ready because that's when they've turned black with that distinctive white line along the edge- they're kinda pale or greenish before they're ready. I recall it being late in fall when I collected them.
Thanks Neal. I opened up some pods that were just starting to shrivel and they were definitely purplish black with the distinctive white line so I guess I'll keep those. I did come across a couple that were still green, so will dump those. Some were actually a bit spotted, but had the white line. I guess those weren't quite ready either, do you think? I want to be able send plenty out in the swap if they are ready, but may need to just let them do their thing and have them ready for next year. I think I do have a few left over from last year, so could offer those also...
tcs, please put my name on some of your foxgloves.
Thanks, Maxine
Pam Sue.. Sweet William is in th eDianthus family if I not mistaken. And I sur e ther ebe folsk wanting them. We got a whole lot of folks and who knwos what they may want, so I just doing some of evrything.
gotcha Maxine.
TCS, I would love to have some of the Arizona Sun! Will you please, put me on your list?
This is my first time doing this. Do I put on here what I would like to have. Not sure what to do.
Hi Hollyhocklady, I'm sure someone else can advise you better on what to do, but in the meantime, on the afternoon of Sunday, November 1, Starlight1153 will put up a thread on which we list what we have and what we want. Then we all go crazy oinking for what we want. Some of us will be notifying folks that have what we want via dmail. You don't have to have something to trade individually - just ask. However, some of us might have some unusual seed that we may not list with our other available seeds on the Piggy List Thread, but rather will make a trade (this depends on how hard it may be to grow or come by certain plants). Have I confused you by now?
We edit the one post we each keep on the Piggy List Thread as our seeds are tagged for folks oinking for them, but do not chat. This thread you and I are on now is the chat thread. So, now's the time to be cleaning seed and prowling discount sources of seeds like http://www.valueseeds.com/ (an inexpensive outlet for Thompson & Morgan). JL Hudson has bulk seed at pretty inexpensive prices, as well as regular packets. Others may have more suggestions for inexpensive seed sources.
Hope this helps and a BIG welcome to the Piggy Swap

Pam and Star, there's a low, dainty, partial-shade woodland plant called wild sweet william I've been craving for a while, which is named Phlox divaricata - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2618/ .
Does this look like yours, Pam? I already sent a very oinkful dmail to Pam for it - hope it's what I think it is.
I wonder how many more Sweet Williams there are beyond Dianthus barbatus, Phlox divaricata and any DH named Bill?
(ducking - couldn't resist)
Karen
hi
my mom said they were wild phlox and she had them for years. they look like phlox but they have seeds like sweet william. she grew them in iowa then ive had them for a few years.
they are not small and sprawling they can be as tall as two feet tall.ive looked at pics on google and i still dont know what they are.
your link karen..they look somewhat like that but the stems are thick like the sweet williams.
pam sue
I just want to reiterate one thing that bluespiral just said and say it another way. Just because something is on someone's have list, being in the piggy swap does not mean that everything there is up for grabs. I don't mean to turn any piggy faces red or even pink, but (and especially if I haven't mentioned a particular seed and inquired if there is enough interest for me to pack it up), I would really appreciate it if people would wait until I post what is available on Nov. 1st before oinking here or via dmail.. I have not yet finished organizing for the swap, and I haven't yet figured out how much I have available of certain seeds, and even what I'll be offering and what I'll be keeping for myself and trading. I do know that I'll be offering way more than I'll ever oink for, and a very good variety, so hopefully that should suffice. And it would be nice if other people's choice seeds haven't been oinked away pre-swap. Maybe this is happening this year because there is such a gap between joining and the start of the swap - or it isn't clear to new members how this works. I haven't put anyone's name on anything yet, so those folks interested in lily seeds, please wait until I list cultivars and oink for the ones you want individually, and same with the other stuff. Thanks.
PamSue - Your mystery plant really has my curiosity going and can't wait to try it - it sounds like it might be an old-time flower, which I especially love.
karen
Perenniallyme, that makes sense to me. Well, I've played hooky from seed cleaning long enough. Back to my piles and sieves and sacks - glad Star moved this swap up, or we might never have seen the kitchen table before Christmas.
Oh, I better get my Donkey-chasin butt in gear.
Don't have too many. Got plenty of persimmon
seed, you ought to see them under the tree.
They fall off and it doesn't take them long to change
to mush with all this rain we have been getting.
Rides, I hope you get lots of takers for those persimmon seeds. They grow wild in the local parks around here, and seem quite deer resistant. Seems like they'd be perfect in an edible garden.
Here's a persimmon cookie recipe from two of my favorite people on DG - Balvenie and Horseshoe - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6407824 - I like to wait until after frost to pick persimmons along local trails.
For anyone thinking of trying Rides' persimmon seeds, these trees are like holly, in that some trees will be female and others will be male, and you'll need both sexes for pollination in order to get any fruit.
hummmm, how do you tell the difference in a 'male seed' and a 'female seed'
I didn't know males had seeds. velly interesting
