A fascinating wasp/bee-like bug-please help!

Knežak, Slovenia

Hello everyone!

About a month ago I saw a really fascinating insect on the rooftop of a car. It was the same shape and size as a wasp, however its whole body was covered with beige hair that was very thick. No stripes or anything, the only thing that wasn't beige was its rear end, which was white (like a bumblebee's). It also had two quite large perfect circles on each side of the head (position like bird's eyes), I figured those were eyes. They weren't bulging or anything, they were quite flat and unlike any insect eyes I have ever ever seen. This bug was so fascinating to me that I spent many unfortunately fruitless hours online trying to identify it. It was one of the most interesting animals I have ever seen. Unfortunately I couldn't take a picture, but the bug was so distinctive I don't think a picture is even necessary. I would be eternally grateful if someone could help me identify it. I just can't get this animal out of my head.

I would also like to mention that I am from Slovenia, Europe, and this is also where I saw this bug.

I do not know if you have velvet ants or thistledown ants there, but this might give you a starting point. Scroll down to see the picture of the thistledown ant (wingless wasp)

Another possibility is a wingless female moth - this occurs in at least two families, see http://tinyurl.com/y9sxzl3 and http://tinyurl.com/ycoat22 for examples.

Those moths are really neat. I had never heard of wingless moths before.

I was strictly stabbing in the dark as I have no idea what insects are common to Slovenia.
