BAVC Sale- I got some nice ones!!!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Our club had it's annual Fall sale today. I was there bright and early and feel like I've hit the jackpot! I spent, of course, more money than I had planned to, but you all know how that goes!!!! I'll show you the ones that have blooms now:

Chirita 'Nimbus'

(how I love anything with a colored center, especially a yellow center!~)

AV 'Harmony's Little Stinker'

I paid $25 for this one and it's so big. I'd pay $25 easily for one half it's size at Rob's or Lyons.

Even if this one never blooms again, I'll be happy with the foliage.

Streptocarpus 'Hotogogisu'

Oh Wow! You really did hit the jackpot. I am very sure you won't buy anything - uh-huh, sure :-)

awesome finds, love your new sinningia, remember they go dormant sometimes so if the plant dies back doesnt mean its dead, and you should propagate it,somebody in ND might wantt to talk you out of a start sometime,LOL

good finds,congrates

Shanika ,

You did good , wow and it was fun fighting for what you wanted wasn't it LOL have you taken off the boxing gloves yet ? ...............settle down now , you can take them off ............so glad you had fun and got some you really wanted , i got some nice true blooming chimeras on ebay too , most for my first bid of 5.99 and I just love them , now I have lots of chimeras , some I have wanted for a long time but couldn't afford , is'nt it fun to get some of your hearts desire .

Oh and O got my Vg order this week but have been so busy getting them settled and putting down leaves and taking care of the kids I had forgotten to let you know , .......................boy talk about spending money , I sure did with them but i don't order more than once every year or 2 so I don't feel so bad :)

As far as getting more you are in the RR so you may find the box bringing you some goodies you didn't have to pay for thanks to such delightful people on the forum , this is such a fun place and the RR is a blast to be involved in :) I hope everyone has a wonderful time :)

Hugs ,

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

It would be my pleasure to send a start to someone in ND.:) Now, Jim, tell me how to propagate her?

Connie, LOL, it was fun fighting. The gloves didn't come off until I made it safely out the door. They were really plotting. LOL One guy said to the other, "If you trip her, I'll grab the plant when she falls." LOL

The chimeras are really pretty. I hope mine suckers, as I think this would be the easiest way to propagate her. I'm not comfortable doing anything else and I know you can't propagate them true from leaves. Well, if I keep hanging around these wonderful folks on here and in my club, I'm sure I'll learn in no time!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

sinn darth vader sounds like a nice dark one. I'll have to go google him!

Fantastic choices you made, Grow Happy................now you may get to grow some of those by leaf (LOL). Really extra nice plants you got!!!
Harmony's Little Stinker was always a favorite when I grew violets. She will always be a beauty!
Congratulations and am so happy you posted them!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks All!!! I am grinning from ear to ear, still.:)

Question:
Do any of you use cow manure, worm poop or bone meal in your mix?

Monticello, MN

I don't have any sinningias but on ebay I have seen tubers of them offered ? Sorry if I am wrong but for me streps are new :) I was tempted to buy some sinningias but didn't want to have to pay to kill them, I want to do that for free LOL ................not really , i love it when I have success and I am getting better thanks to Jim and Gail , they have sent me some lovely leaves :) and once I get the streps big they grow like weeds :)

Connie

Monticello, MN

Jim, Gail and I are adding worm castings to our mix but I haven't used it long enough to give it a yes or a no but i think Jim has used it for a longer while so ask him :)

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Those are so beautiful! All of them!!! I am not close to any shows (wish I was closer to go to Bonnie's) but I have placed orders for leaves. I am hoping to grow them out through winter so I can share them in the spring. I have episcias but no A.V. to trade back. I will this spring by golly!

Monticello, MN

Shanika ,

I love the Georgia Sunset sinningia so later if you have a start you would like to sell or trade with please let me know as I would love to have one of her , she is georgous

Connie :)

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Would love to Connie!!!!

Jim/Gail- Help!! How do I propagate the sinn?

Thanks,
Shanika

AspenJen- Would love to trade some violets or streps in the spring for your episcias!

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

We can do that :)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

All you do with a sinningia is take a small cutting, dome it and it will root into a new plant with a tuber.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

I am still trying to figure out who needed (wanted) Artic Frost. I can share it with whoever it was in the spring.

Connie

Monticello, MN

Gail ,

You say to take a small cutting of the sinningia , do you mean a leaf like AVs or a section like when you divide large streps ? Sorry I don't always know what a cutting is if I don't have a plant to look at and as I said I don't have any sinns .

Connie

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

OK>>>>>>>>I am not good at this explaining but you have to take a one or two node cutting off the main stem or off of a branch stem.........

Let me find a site that tells you how.........
http://www.burwur.net/sinns/3prop.htm

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Gail, thanks! that was helpful.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That site didn't help me because I bought sinningias (florist's gloxinias are sinningias) from David thompson and asked him if I could start cuttings..........here are three pictures of the ones I started by just taking a tip cutting from the big sinningias.

I even started some by leaf..............which means they will take a long time to form a tuber but they will......................I sent 3 to Amy and hers are doing great also....

Here are the 6 leaves I started................they are growing like crazy

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Look at this leaf. I had nothing but a leaf to start......so I don't know where this other growth is coming from unless the leaf has begun to form a tuber of some kind.......?

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Here are some of the cuttings I started.........with just small tip cuttings and look how big they are getting and putting on new leaves all the time.
