Fall 2009 AV&G Round Robin - The Journey Begins!!!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1040011/

It is important that each participant take out what they want to keep, toss what is iffy, add to the box and mail it ASAP. This is what will make it go smoothly.

Everyone pays the postage to get the box Priority with tracking information to the next person on the list.

The box will be started with leaves, starters, and whatever else can be thrown in. When you receive the box and there are dead leaves, etc., please throw them out and replace what you can. Please keep the names and address list with the box for the next person. You are welcome to place anything in the box, just remember you need to replace what you take. You are also welcome to throw in extras. But please don't throw in your old leaves, make sure what you are sending is viable plant material for propagation.

You are not obligated to take anything you don't want, so if something doesn't suit your fancy, send it out to the next recipient on the list.

Once you have made your selection, post to the group what you have taken and when you sent the box out to the next recipient. Including a tracking number is helpful.

DO NOT POST TO THE GROUP WHAT IS IN THE BOX, only what you kept.

***There will be ONE heat pack included in the box (try to save it for RainGazer to send the box to Jim). Please, please, please only use it if the temperatures warrant it for the next person on the list. If in doubt, post on the forum, and the more experienced shippers can give their opinion. I tried to plan the route so the cooler people will be done closer to the beginning of the robin. If it IS used, if anyone who receives the box after can put another in the box, that would be great - as I'm sure one may be needed at the end . . . ***

The box route may look a bit erratic, and not make sense in some places, but it does conform to everyone's 'restrictions' (dates, regular traders, etc). I will post a link to the map soon, so you can keep an eye on where the box currently is!

Please check the DG thread before sending to the next person on the list. If they have not posted within the past 3-5 days, cross that person off the list and send to the person after. This may sound harsh, but with the distance the box has to go, we do not want it to sit on the porch of someone who may be out of town or otherwise indisposed.

Monticello, MN

Oh Pat you are so smart for thinking of checking the wish list for what to add to the box for the people who will be getting the box after you , I wouldn't have thought of it if you hadn't mentioned it , it should be a duh but for me even the duhs are duhs LOL Thank you for mentioning it , will go look now :)

Hugs,
Connie :)

Thanks for all your hardwork, Nichole............I know how time consuming this must be for you.
Please ask everyone when they get their box to take the time and post what they took out......that is half the fun in a Round Robin. Last time, many people didn't even post with a picture and tell us what they got...................

Have fun today, zozzl!!!!!

Nice av Nichole!!!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

whoohoo, The fun begins ^_^

Williston, ND

yup i cant wait

JIM

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Already did, Gail!

I already know what I am putting in the box for the person or two after me, that's for sure!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I forgot to go back and see who is sending to me and who I am sending to......................
Already can't wait!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lucky me..............get from LilyPad (jannich's friend) and I get to send to stownes........I remember her from a year or two ago..................this is great!!!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

It's not here yet!!! Boo!! LOL!!

I did have a wild hope that the usps was going to work super fast for us, but there is always Monday!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I forget that the person you send to may not take everything so you have to think ahead.........finally getting this................and look at the next couple of people after the name you are actually mailing it to..........little slow here today^_^

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hi,I hate to butt in on the RR and please tell me to mind my own business, you won't hurt my feeling.LOL BUT
Have you done the math on how long this round robin is going to take? 23 people X 3 days for shipping(maybe more)====69 days.Thats going to go into the end of Nov or Dec.Isn't that going to be to cold for people in northern states? Maybe we should have 2 boxes going?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Jan..........this is all I have thought about since so many people kept joining in on a fall RR..........someone is going to get dead plants and leaves before the end................????????

Nichole, I know I am a worry wart about this subject and have posted before about it.........

***edited to say that if I am real lucky and every single person sends it on the day they get it............I will get mine in 60 days in the first week of December. I hope Lilypad doesn't have snow in December (not sure where she lives)

This message was edited Oct 3, 2009 7:17 PM

I was thinking the same thing about how long it will take. LOL I don't expect to get it before the first of December at best.

We cross posted, Gail. If you get it the first week of Dec, that puts me the 2nd. And then it has to go to Jim. How cold is it in ND in the middle of Dec? ^_^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Freezing of course, but I remember something about you using a heat pad which works if it is freezing at your house, too...........I put a heat pad in for Goldleaf one time because she said it was really cold in Maryland.......they were all dead upon arrival because I put the heat pad in at my house when it was 85 degrees (LOL).........have to keep our sense of humor about this.........

We'll see what happens. If it turns out that me dropping out would benefit Jim, I'll do that. I don't want to drop out at all, but I want him to be sure to get a box of viable plant material back. But, I just looked at the location of the last several people and the Southerners are at the end, 'cept for Jim!

Sounds like Jim should be put in the middle somewhere like I am , I live next door to him

Connie

Williston, ND

the end will be fine and nobody needs to drop out, might be cold or might not be,we will just play it by ear,
Just remember at the end ,do send episcias, and wrap violets well ,streps will be fine and sinningia do ok too and so does the rest
youll be surprized

JIM

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Glad you posted that, Jim. I was just coming to the computer to tell everyone that we can make this work!!!!! And ........it will be so much fun............we may have to check with the recipient of the package and find a window of time , but it doesn't always freeze every day in every place in the north.........and most people have post office boxes which means they don't get left out in the weather anyway.........(I have one because of heat......not cold)

Chicago, IL

Pat (Zozzle) you are behind me so it doesn't help you but I did add a list to the wish list included in this part of DG. I don't have many things to choose from to give though I like the idea quite a bit to let others know what you like if you can though I suppose some of us simply do not care and like anything we get.

MSU, MS(Zone 8a)

Anna,

I did find a few things at the show yesterday that were on someone's list so that really tickled me! I think it is helpful because we might not include something because we think nobody would want it but it may be just what someone is looking for and most of us have so many babies we don't know what to do with them:)

The show was really neat because I got to see how the judged show works and look at all the displays, show plants, floral arrangements and container gardens. My AV club is having a show in the Spring and it really helped me to see how they do things. Gave me a bunch of ideas for container gardens which I think are really neat.

Have a blessed Sunday everyone,

Pat

Just so you all know, Jim WANTED to be the first/last person on the robin. Also, I did state above that I tried to get all the northern people first. There will be a heat pack included in the box, so use when needed - that means someone else will need to replace, so those on the second half or so of the robin please make sure you have a heat pack to spare (Rain - if you don't have any, I will send one to you separate). Just do like Jim said, and everything should be fine.

I hope you know, Nichole, I wasn't fussing about the job you did. I'm just concerned about the things that can't be helped, like mailing time. It was totally NOT a personal attack on you. ^_^ I'm sure all will be fine. I'm just SO excited to be in on this RR! ^_^

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Sorry has been a busy day here... Ok where do we get heat packs from? and what states need them? We have already been down to 44 degrees here at night... So I know we are still good to go for my part of the state of Va. So for those of us or maybe just me :-( who have never used a heat pack to tell me how to use them and where to get them.
Hugs,
Susan

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Don't use a heating pad unless you really have to, Susan........they get so darn hot..........44 degrees at night will not affect any package.......they are in the postal system where it is not cold............

Day temps are important but if you are there to get the package and it is not left out you should be okay..........we can all (regardless of where we live get some good insulation and use it in every box)........that is good for both heat and cold........

I hate heating packs unless they are going to where Jim or Brenda live..........zone 3!!! maybe 2 for Jim..............

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

All I can say is, monitor the 10 day forecasts . . . if you are in doubt, post on the forum. Advice will be given. And a heat pack forwarded if needed. ^_^

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Why hasn't the mailman gotten here yet?!?

Williston, ND

Monticello, MN

Why Nicole are you excited about something coming in the mail ?????????? :) This is so fun isn't it , I got a few leaves today and it is exciting so really enjoy searching the box as I know Jim put some wonderful things in it , he is sooooooo good at making smiling faces , and handsprings......... and cartwheels ............and .....................oh you better settle down or you will be too pooped to pot :) Have fun Nicole :) and thank you Jim for giving her big smiles on a Monday :)

Warm Hugs
Connie , Wish I was a butterfly on the wall at Nicole's home today ( don't want to be a fly , would get swatted , and I don't like flies :)

Monticello, MN

Nicole ,

I have a question about the RR , are we allowed to Dmail some of the people that we would be sending things to to ask what they might like put in the box ? ............I know some people have want lists on the want / have thread but they may not be up to date and not all people have one .........like me .........just haven't gotten around to it , but there might be some things that someone might really like and for me if I had it I would love to add it to the box so they could have one of their hearts desires ..................so is this allowed ?

Thank You Nicole , I bet you are having so much fun :)
Connie

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

No, not looking forward to getting mail. Why?

Connie - I don't see why you couldn't dmail certain people. I'm ok with it.

Well, must go get son from schoolbus. Maybe I'll check the mailbox one more time today . . . ^_^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Other people are already doing that, Connie................I heard someone talking about it this morning in a dmail............I haven't done it yet but intend to contact the recipient of mine and ask her if there is anything in particular she wants...........

Williston, ND

cool but i cant email anyone and ask them what they want, lol
